      Cubs option Christian Villanueva and Rafael Lopez to AAA

      The Cubs optioned two players to Triple-A Iowa and assigned another six players to minor league camp on Monday. Infielder Christian Villanueva and catcher Rafael Lopez were optioned to Triple-A. Villanueva was hitless with four strikeouts and an RBI in eight at bats, this spring. Lopez hit .250 with two RBI. The non-roster invitees assigned to the minors were RHP Corey Black (13.50 ERA in 1.1 spring innings), RHP Pierce Johnson (one hit and three walks in four scoreless innings), RHP Armando Rivero (27.00 ERA in a third of an inning), RHP Donn Roach (12.00 ERA in three innings), LHP Hunter Cervenka (0-1, 15.43) and infielder Logan Watkins (no spring at bats).

      Corey Black heads to Chicago for Alfonso Soriano

      The Yankees and Cubs officially announced their trade Friday, with Alfonso Soriano headed to the Yankees in exchange for minor-league pitcher Corey Black. Black, who was mentioned as a possible part of the trade when it first came up Thursday, has a 4.25 ERA in 82 2/3 innings for Class A Tampa this season. He is a former fourth-round draft choice by the Yankees, who has a 3.79 ERA in his career, with 9.2 strikeouts and 4.0 walks per nine innings in 135 1/3 innings.

      Alfonso Soriano headed to the Yankees

      The Chicago Cubs have agreed to send outfielder Alfonso Soriano to the New York Yankees, according to Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. The deal now needs commissioner approval. The Yankees are expected to pay an estimated $7 million to $8 million of the $25 million remaining on Soriano's contract, according to Heyman. In return, Chicago will likely receive anywhere from one to three prospects. Heyman said pitchers Corey Black and Tommy Kahnle are strong possibilities. Soriano played for the Yankees from 1999 to 2003, hitting 98 home runs and accumulating a .284 average. This season, he has 17 home runs, 51 RBI and a slash line of .254/.287/.467.

      Yankees begin trimming roster

      The New York Yankees made their first round of roster cuts Saturday and removed the following players from camp: first baseman Kyle Roller and pitchers Corey Black, Matt Daley, Nick Goody, Shane Greene, Bryan Mitchell, Zachary Nuding, Michael O'Brien and Ryan Pope.
