Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Kahnle (shoulder) will need to throw 1-to-2 more bullpen sessions before progressing to facing hitters, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Kahnle threw off the mound Tuesday for the second time since he had his rehab slowed because of a lingering shoulder issue. It would appear he should be ready for his first live batting practice session next week and he'll likely need at least a couple of those before being cleared for a rehab assignment.... See More ... Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Cleared for bullpen session
Kahnle (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Kahnle has been working his way back from a right shoulder issue that first cropped up late last season. He should need a few bullpen sessions and/or live batting practice sessions before being cleared for a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Will return to mound work soon
Kahnle (shoulder) is slated to resume throwing in the bullpen during the upcoming week, per MLB.com. Kahnle ended last season on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation, and the issue delayed his offseason throwing program, causing the Yankees to bring him along slowly during spring training. The veteran struggled to bounce back following a live throwing session in late March and subsequently had his throwing program slowed again, but he now appears set to resume a ramp-up. It's not yet clear when Kahnle may begin a rehab assignment, but it's still possible he can join the big-league bullpen by the end of April if he doesn't experience any further setbacks.... Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Proceeding with caution
The Yankees have slowed Kahnle's (shoulder) throwing program after he struggled to bounce back from his last live session, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. Kahnle hasn't been shut down from throwing, which is a good sign, but the club wants to make sure it doesn't push him too hard in his recovery. The training staff has yet to establish a date for the right-hander's rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Goes on IL
The Yankees placed Kahnle (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Kahnle wasn't able to pitch in any Grapefruit League games after a bout with right shoulder inflammation delayed his throwing program over the offseason and put him well behind the Yankees' other pitchers at the start of spring training. The veteran righty should be close to facing hitters if he hasn't already, but he'll likely require multiple minor-league rehab appearances before he's ready to make his 2024 debut with the Yankees.... Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Likely to require IL stint
Kahnle (shoulder) acknowledged Wednesday that he's unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Kahnle ended last season on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, and he's behind schedule this spring after the injury took a little longer than expected to clear up. The reliever is throwing pain-free bullpen sessions and looks to be on track to make a Grapefruit League appearance or two later this month, but he won't quite be ready for Opening Day. Kahnle held a nifty 2.66 ERA and 48:19 K:BB over 40.2 innings in 2023. If healthy, Kahnle should be a key setup man again for the Yankees in 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Being brought along slowly
The Yankees are bringing Kahnle along slowly this spring after his 2023 season was ended due to right shoulder inflammation, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Kahnle appears to be healthy and has been throwing bullpen sessions, but manager Aaron Boone said Monday that the club might not put him into a Grapefruit League game until toward the end of spring. Boone would not commit to the reliever being ready for Opening Day, saying it depends on how many spring appearances he's able to make. Kahnle has had trouble staying healthy but has been terrific when on the mound, most recently putting up a 2.66 ERA and 48:19 K:BB over 40.2 frames in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Nabs save in nightcap
Kahnle earned a save against the Red Sox in Game 2 of a twin bill Thursday, walking one batter and striking out four over two scoreless and hitless innings. Kahnle entered in the eighth inning with New York holding a one-run lead and retired the side in order. Clay Holmes has mostly handled closing duties for the Yankees this season, but with New York tacking on two additional runs in the top of the ninth and Kahnle at just 10 pitches, manager Aaron Boone elected to allow the veteran right-hander to close things out. He did so with ease, striking out three batters around a two-out walk in the final frame to notch his second save of the campaign. Kahnle has been a key piece of New York's bullpen this season, posting a 2.25 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB over 40 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Picks up 10th hold
Kahnle walked one batter and struck out one batter in one inning against the Astros on Saturday to register a hold. Kahnle worked the seventh frame, issuing a leadoff walk that was quickly wiped out by a double play. The veteran reliever needed 15 total pitches to get through the inning -- his third straight scoreless frame -- while preserving the Yankees' 2-1 lead. Kahnle has emerged as an important part of New York's bullpen since making his campaign debut after returning from injury at the start of June, registering 10 holds and one save while posting a 2.22 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB over 24.1 frames.... Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Notches save Wednesday
Kahnle earned a save against the Mariners on Wednesday, retiring both batters he faced, including one by strikeout. Clay Holmes has recently regained a hold on the Yankees' closer position, but he was held out Wednesday after tossing 21 pitches over 1.2 innings the previous night. That allowed Kahnle to get a save opportunity after Michael King allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base in the ninth, and the former got the job done by allowing a sacrifice fly before striking out Eugenio Suarez to end the contest. Kahnle didn't make his season debut until June 2 due to a biceps injury, but he's been outstanding since then, pitching 7.2 scoreless frames with a 9:1 K:BB over eight appearances. He's earned two holds and figures to be one of the team's top high-leverage relievers moving forward.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Hurls scoreless frame in 2023 debut
Kahnle pitched a scoreless inning against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one batter. Kahnle had been out all season with a biceps injury before he was activated Thursday. The veteran reliever made his campaign debut against the team for which he played last year, though a forearm injury limited him to just 13 regular-season appearances with Los Angeles. Kahnle handled a pretty hefty workload Friday, tossing 29 pitches (17 strikes) and fanning James Outman after allowing a two-out double followed by a walk. The right-hander will likely get a chance to work in high-leverage situations for the Yankees pretty quickly, but with only 15 big-league games under his belt since 2019, he may not pitch in back-to-back contests for awhile.... Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Activated from 60-day IL
The Yankees activated Kahnle (biceps) from the 60-day injured list Thursday. Kahnle will join the Yankees' bullpen ahead of their three-game weekend series at Dodger Stadium after missing the first two months of the 2023 regular season due to lingering right biceps tendinitis. He signed a two-year, $11.5 million free-agent contract with New York over the winter and could potentially pitch his way into a share of the team's unsettled closer role.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: In line to return Friday
Kahnle (biceps) is headed to Los Angeles to join the Yankees for their weekend series against the Dodgers, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Kahnle joins Josh Donaldson (hamstring) and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) as Yankees expected to return from the injured list this weekend. The reliever has been out all year with right biceps tendinitis but has looked sharp on his rehab assignment, yielding one run with a 6:3 K:BB over five frames.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Still week away from return
Kahnle (biceps) could rejoin the Yankees' bullpen for next weekend's series against the Dodgers, manager Aaron Boone told Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News on Friday. Kahnle indicated earlier this week that he should be ready to go following a third rehab appearance Thursday, but evidently the Yankees want him to knock a little more rust off. The reliever hasn't allowed a hit or a run in three rehab innings, striking out two and walking one. Kahnle has been out all season with right biceps tendinitis.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Starting rehab assignment
Kahnle (biceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Thursday. Kahnle has been out all season with right biceps tendinitis but has been throwing off a mound lately without issue. He is eligible for activation May 29 and should have a shot to return on that day.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Throws another side session
Kahnle (biceps) threw another bullpen session Thursday without issue, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Kahnle might do one more side session before he heads out on a minor-league rehab assignment, per Yankees manager Aaron Boone. The situation can be slow-played because Kahnle is currently on the 60-day IL with right biceps tendinitis and isn't eligible for activation until May 29.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Nearing rehab assignment
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Kahnle (biceps) is close to beginning a rehab assignment, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Kahnle will throw another bullpen session Thursday, which could be the last step before he reports to a minor-league affiliate. He's expected to require 4-to-6 rehab appearances before being activated, setting him up to return in late May or early June if all goes well.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Throws 15-pitch side session
Kahnle (biceps) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session at Target Field on Wednesday, and he'll throw another side session Sunday in Texas, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Kahnle said after his bullpen session Wednesday that he "felt great," but he will now need to see how he responds to the session in the coming days before the Yankees determine his next steps. The 33-year-old has yet to make his season debut after being diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis during spring training. Once healthy, Kahnle should be a middle-innings option out of the bullpen, but he'll likely make multiple rehab appearances before he's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list in late May.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Expects to throw off mound soon
Kahnle (biceps) has been playing catch and expects to throw from a mound within a week, per MLB.com. Kahnle is dealing with right biceps tendinitis and is on the 60-day IL. The veteran reliever appears to be progressing in his throwing program, however, and moving on to mound work will be a significant step toward a return. Kahnle will likely take his time to ramp up since he isn't eligible to be activated from the injured list until late May.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Shifts to 60-day IL
Kahnle (biceps) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday. The right-hander recently resumed playing catch after being shut down from throwing for a few weeks, but he now won't be eligible to return from the injured list until the end of May. Kahnle received a cortisone injection to address tendinitis in his right biceps March 21.... See More ... See Less
