Athletics' Sean Nolin: Will compete for a rotation spot

Nolin will compete for a rotation spot with the A's in 2016, CSN Bay Area's Joe Stiglich reports. Sonny Gray and Rich Hill are the only two pitchers currently on Oakland's roster who seem like locks to be in the Opening Day rotation. Jesse Hahn (forearm) will need to show he is healthy, and there are performance questions with Kendall Graveman, Chris Bassitt and Aaron Brooks, so with a strong spring Nolin could find himself in the rotation when the A's break camp. Nolin has better pure stuff than Graveman (the other pitcher acquired from Toronto in the Josh Donaldson deal), and could end up being a solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter, especially in that ballpark.

A's SP Sean Nolin lasts only 2 1/3 innings Sunday vs. Giants

Athletics starting pitcher Sean Nolin was not sharp Sunday, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk in just 2 1/3 innings of work against the Giants. That's now back-to-back miserable starts for the young lefty, as he gave up five runs on seven hits through five innings last time out against the Rangers. Through five starts, Nolin has posted a 5.25 ERA and 1.67 WHIP, with a disappointing 13:11 K:BB to boot.

Athletics SP Sean Nolin just OK in Thursday no-decision

Athletics starter Sean Nolin took a no-decision on Thursday against the White Sox, surrendering five hits, two earned runs and three walks in five innings. Nolin turned in another solid effort in his third start since his Sept. 4 call-up from Triple-A Nashville. The young southpaw has given up three runs or less in all three appearances, with control being his most visible weakness. Nolin has surrendered eight walks in 16 2/3 innings pitched for a robust 4.44 BB/9 rate, a number well above his 2.99 metric over 485 2/3 minor-league frames. Nolin figures to receive at least two more starts to further his development before the 2015 campaign concludes.

Athletics pitcher Sean Nolin could be starter when healthy

Athletics pitcher Sean Nolin could see a larger role when he is able to return to the major league club, according to Bay Area News Group. Nolin, who is currently on the 15-day DL while recovering from sports hernia surgery, made his first rehab appearance Saturday for Triple-A Nashville. He threw two innings and is expected to make a start in his next appearance, manager Bob Melvin said. "Now with some of the issues we have, some of our depth isn't as much," Melvin said. "He will definitely be looked at to start. We'll stretch him out." Nolin made one start in 2013 for Toronto. "We envisioned him competing for a job," Melvin said. "We weren't able to see him at all in the spring. He was one of the key members in that trade. And, being left-handed, we were excited to see what he had to offer, and we just haven't to this point."
