Orlando Calixte: Signed to minor league deal with Royals

Calixte signed a minor league contract with the Royals on Thursday. He was just non-tendered, so the Royals save money on his 2016 salary while keeping Calixte in the system. Once considered an intriguing prospect, relative to other position players in the Royals system, he now has the look of a potential utility middle infielder.

      Orlando Calixte: Non-tendered by Royals

The Royals declined to tender Calixte a contract for 2016. Even with Ben Zobrist likely to leave in free agency, Calixte was deemed expandable. The 23-year-old hit eight homers and stole 22 bases with Triple-A Omaha last season, but managed just a .229/.287/.339 batting line, and the team still has Christian Colon and Cheslor Cuthbert for infield depth, and Raul Mondesi waiting in the wings.

Royals send down Fuentes, add Calixte for infield depth

The Royals recalled infielder Orlando Calixte and optioned outfielder Reymond Fuentes down to Triple-A Omaha, per the Kansas City Star. Calixte began the minor-league season with a .154 batting average (4 for 26) with two walks, three runs scored, a double, a home run and an RBI in seven games. The move gives Kansas City infield depth after Alcides Escobar went down with a left knee sprain and contusion. Christian Colon got the start at shortstop in Escobar's place on Saturday.
