Phillies' Kelly Dugan: Elects free agency

Dugan elected free agency on Friday. Dugan was outrighted off the Phillies' 40-man roster last week. He has shown some hitting ability in the minors, but has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. He shouldn't have a problem finding a team willing to give him a minor league contract this offseason.

Kelly Dugan becoming a 'complete player'

Phillies outfield prospect Kelly Dugan has had a slow progression through the minors since being a second-round pick in 2009, finally reaching Double-A in 2013. However, he belted a career-high 20 homers and slugged .506 in 112 games between high Class A and Double-A last season, giving the Phillies hope he still has a bright future ahead. "I think obviously it's easy to see the potential with the bat in his hands and he loves to hit," Phillies director of player development Joe Jordan told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I think he's a student of hitting, but I think the most impressive thing for me is that he has really invested in the defensive side of things. Last year we really started to see his athleticism more in the outfield. "This guy has more of a chance to be a complete player than most people think. I realized initially when I got here . . . that he is really growing in all aspects of his game."
