Phillies' Joely Rodriguez: Outrighted to Triple-A

Rodriguez was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday, Stephen Gross of The Morning Call reports. Rodriguez was on the 40-man roster, but he struggled at the Triple-A level in 2015 to the tune of a 6.32 ERA and more walks than strikeouts in 68.1 innings. He was eventually demoted and ended the year at Double-A, but he should get another chance at the Triple-A level next season.

Phillies' Amaro: Joely Rodriguez has 'thrown well' this spring

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. named pitcher Joely Rodriguez as a potential option for the fifth-starter role and said Tuesday that the former Pirate has "thrown well" this spring, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. "He's thrown well," Amaro said. "He seems like he's pretty confident. Really, honestly, it's an open competition. We'll see who kind of steps up and takes the ball." Rodriguez, who is scheduled to pitch Thursday, has given up just one unearned run on two hits and two walks in seven innings this spring. "I know there's an opportunity here," he said recently through a translator. "I'm very glad to be able to be in a position to compete for a spot in the rotation. But all I'm concentrating on right now is to be a better pitcher every time I go out on the field." Acquired from the Pirates in December in exchange for Antonio Bastardo, Rodriguez went 6-11 with a 4.84 ERA and 73:43 K:BB ratio in 134 innings with Double-A Altoona last season.
