Mets pitcher Logan Verrett to start Thursday

Mets pitcher Logan Verrett will make another start Thursday against the Phillies, Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal reports. Verrett will remain a member of the rotation for the season's final week as the Mets transition Jon Niese to a bullpen role. Though he was tagged for four runs in five innings in his outing last week, Verrett remains an intriguing spot-start option in daily and season-long formats due to the matchup with the Phillies, who have provided little offensive production in the second half.

Mets' Logan Verrett to start in place of Jacob deGrom on Tuesday

Mets starter Jacob deGrom will be skipped in the rotation Tuesday with Logan Verrett getting the nod in his place, ESPN New York reports. deGrom has a 6.41 ERA and .330 opponent batting average over his past five starts. The Mets believe that fatigue has resulted in a change in his release point, resulting in a loss in his normal pinpoint control, as his pitches have drifted up in the strike zone. The hope is that by skipping a start, it will relieve the fatigue and allow deGrom to close the season out strong. Verrett started in place of Matt Harvey on Monday and now gets another opportunity to replace a core member of the team's rotation. He went five innings Monday and should be able to go longer if needed Tuesday.

Mets' Logan Verrett goes five strong, gets no-decision in victory

Making another spot start for the Mets, rookie pitcher Logan Verrett was sharp Monday night against the Marlins. The young right-hander allowed one run on three hits over five innings. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth with the score tied 1-1, so he did not earn a decision in the 4-3 victory. For the second time in a month, Verrett was making a start in place of Matt Harvey. And both times Verrett pitched effectively. It remains to be seen if Verrett will make another start this season, or if he will be primarily used out of the bullpen for the Mets down the stretch.

Logan Verrett excels in spot start for Mets

Filling in for ace Matt Harvey, reliever Logan Verrett came through in a big way during a spot start Sunday, shutting down the Rockies to help the Mets complete a road sweep. Verrett nearly went the distance, tossing eight dominant innings in a tough place for pitchers, giving up just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight. He did it in an economical 93 pitches - not bad for his first MLB start. Verrett (1-0) hadn't pitched more than three innings all season before Sunday. His solid start will keep him on the roster, as the Mets decided not to send him to the minors after the game in order to make room for David Wright.
