      Cardinals shut down SP Tim Cooney with appendicitis

      Southpaw Tim Cooney, who made six starts for the Cardinals this season, has been shut down for the rest of the year with appendicitis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Cooney managed one win and five no-decisions in those outings, but compiled a 3.16 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings.

      Cardinals make moves with pitchers Mitch Harris, Tim Cooney

      The Cardinals have made two moves with minor league pitchers who have major league experience, per MLB.com. They have activated Mitch Harris from the disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis. They have also placed Tim Cooney on the minor league DL with appendicitis. Harris, who has been sidelined with a groin injury, compiled a 1-1 record with a 3.10 ERA this season before going down. Cooney has performed well as a spot starter, but the return to health of Jaime Garcia resulted in his demotion to the minors.

      Cardinals left-hander Tim Cooney established a new career-high with seven innings pitched in his start against the Braves on Friday. Cooney allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out five on the evening. He did not walk a batter, needing just 74 pitches to get through the seventh. He earned his first career victory, as the Cardinals went on to win 4-2. Both runs Cooney allowed came in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double and a wild pitch. Otherwise, Cooney was solid in his sixth big-league start. The young lefty hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his starts this year, as he now holds a fine 3.16 ERA.

      Cardinals set upcoming starting rotation

      The Cardinals will start pitcher Lance Lynn for Wednesday's game at the Chicago White Sox, reports MLB.com. Lynn would then be followed by John Lackey for Thursday's contest against the Royals with Tim Cooney starting Friday's start against the Braves. The team will then turn to Carlos Martinez on Saturday and Michael Wacha on Sunday.

      Cardinals left-hander Tim Cooney performed well enough Tuesday to earn another start Sunday in Pittsburgh, MLB.com has reported. Cooney receives the nod over Tyler Lyons. One had to remain in the rotation while Jaime Garcia recovers from a left groin strain. "I thought they both threw well," Mike Matheny said. "Tim did a real nice job for us we'll give him another spot." Cooney has allowed three runs on seven hits in 11 1/3 innings over his last two starts after taking a pounding in his only other outing of the season in late April.
