  • Peter O'Brien: Let go by Atlanta

The Braves released O'Brien on Monday. According to David O'Brien of The Athletic, during the latter stages of summer camp, O'Brien was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, derailing any hope he had of cracking the Braves' season-opening 30-man roster. Though O'Brien has presumably cleared all COVID-19-related protocols, the Braves evidently determined he wasn't worth keeping around at their alternate training site in Gwinnett. The Braves added 2020 fourth-round pick Spencer Strider to the 60-man roster pool in a corresponding move.

  • Braves' Peter O'Brien: Lands on IL

O'Brien (undisclosed) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Andersen Pickard of MLBDailyDish.com reports. The reasoning behind O'Brien's move to the injured list is not clear. The 29-year-old, who owns a career .209/.275/.434 slash line across 200 major-league plate appearances, joined the Braves as a non-roster invitee in January and will serve as organizational depth once healthy.

  • Braves' Peter O'Brien: Will be part of 60-man roster

O'Brien will be a part of the Braves' 60-man roster, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. O'Brien joined the braves as a non-roster invitee in January and went 6-for-32 with four home runs and seven RBI during spring training, although he also struck out 13 times. The 29-year-old has had limited results in the majors during short stints over four seasons, hitting .209/.275/.434 with 11 home runs and 73 strikeouts over 200 plate appearances. Given his inability to carve out a major-league role in the past, it's unlikely that he'll be a big part of the Braves' major-league plans in 2020, although he could be a fill-in at designated hitter if injuries strike.

  • Braves' Peter O'Brien: Signs minors deal with Atlanta

O'Brien joined the Braves as a non-roster invitee Wednesday. O'Brien has received 200 big-league plate appearances over parts of four seasons but hasn't done much with them, hitting .209/.275/.434 with a 36.5 percent strikeout rate. He'll likely be an organizational depth option for the Braves this season.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Back in action with New Orleans

O'Brien (ribs) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in his first game back with Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday. A rib injury put O'Brien on the major-league injured list in May and the Marlins ultimately decided he was not worth waiting around for; they designated him for assignment June 20 to make room for Zac Gallen. The 28-year-old O'Brien cleared waivers and has since been cleared to return to active competition with New Orleans, where he is likely to play out the remainder of the campaign, with an outside shot at a September callup.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Remains in organization

O'Brien (ribs) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. O'Brien had been on the injured list for more than a month when he was designated for assignment Thursday. He'll fill an organizational depth role for the Marlins once healthy.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Designated for assignment

O'Brien (ribs) was designated for assignment Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. O'Brien has been sidelined for nearly a month with a rib injury. Prior to landing on the shelf, the 28-year-old slashed just .167/.255/.262 in 14 games, so the Marlins decided to drop him from their 40-man roster rather than wait for him to get healthy. This move frees up a spot on Miami's 40-man roster for Thursday's starter, Zac Gallen, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A New Orleans.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Beginning rehab assignment

O'Brien (ribs) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. O'Brien will be eligible to return from the injured list Friday and appears to be tracking for a return close to that date. It's not clear that he'll have a big-league role to return to once healthy, however, as he's hit just .167/.255/.262 in 14 games for the Marlins this season.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Lands on injured list

O'Brien was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left rib cage contusion Saturday. O'Brien is hitting just .167/.255/.262 in 14 games for the Marlins this season. Garrett Cooper (hand) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Not starting Sunday

O'Brien is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Braves, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. The Marlins brought O'Brien back from the minors on Saturday and immediately installed him as the starting left fielder in place of the injured Garrett Cooper (hand). Though Cooper will remain on the injured list for at least the next week and a half, O'Brien won't be promised full-time run in the outfield unless his bat warrants the steady playing time. O'Brien has registered just four hits while striking out 15 times in 30 at-bats with Miami this season.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Sent to minors

O'Brien was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. O'Brien has started nine games in right field with Garrett Cooper (calf) on the injured list, but struggled mightily by going 3-for-27 with 14 strikeouts. Austin Dean was called up from New Orleans to bolster Miami's outfield depth.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Hits bench

O'Brien is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Mets, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports. O'Brien will give way to Rosell Herrera in right field Wednesday after starting the last three games. Since being recalled from the minors last week, O'Brien is just 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Recalled, joins lineup

O'Brien was recalled by the Marlins on Sunday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. O'Brien is batting seventh against the Rockies. O'Brien returns to Miami to replace the injured Garrett Cooper (calf). He will immediately jump into the starting lineups. O'Brien continued to struggle to make contact throughout spring training -- he struck out 19 times in 41 at-bats -- though he has also flashed the ability to hit for power throughout his time in the minor leagues.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Optioned to Triple-A

O'Brien was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Saturday, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports. O'Brien seemed to be in line for a regular role in a corner outfield spot, but he won't get the chance right away. He impressed in a 22-game sample in the big leagues last season, hitting .273/.338/.530, but the Marlins will go with other options for now. Garrett Cooper could be in line for a starting role with O'Brien out of the picture.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Big day at plate

O'Brien went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBI in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. While the 28-year-old is still looking for his first spring homer and is hitting only .216 (8-for-37) through 16 games with a 6:18 BB:K, half of those hits have been two-baggers. The Marlins are counting on O'Brien to supply some much-needed power to the heart of their lineup, which should give him a long leash to begin the regular season even if his contact issues carry forward. He remains a risky fantasy option, albeit one with intriguing upside.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Beginning to heat up

O'Brien went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in Sunday's spring game against Atlanta. O'Brien kicked off the scoring in the first inning on a single to right field and clubbed a grand slam in the fifth to give the Marlins a 5-1 lead. After a slow start to spring, he's now 4-for-26 at the dish. He still has a long way to go to earn a roster spot, although Sunday's performance is a step in the right direction.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Awful start to spring

O'Brien has gone 0-for-11 with seven strikeouts while trying to transition to right field this spring, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports. The Marlins are hoping the minor-league slugger, who hit 30 homers between Double-A and Triple-A last season before swatting four more in 22 September games for Miami, is adequate enough defensively that they can get his bat into their underpowered lineup, but so far O'Brien isn't giving the club much reason to keep him around. He still has time to find his stroke at the plate, and his competition for a roster spot is lackluster at best, but for now the 28-year-old remains little more than a deep-league lottery ticket for fantasy purposes.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Smacks three-run homer in win

O'Brien went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in the Marlins' 6-4 win over the Phillies on Sunday. O'Brien plated two runs on his fourth-inning home run off Nick Pivetta and padded the Marlins' lead with a RBI groundout in the sixth. The 28-year-old has started in three of the Marlins' last five games and could provide some useful power numbers in NL-only formats over the final two weeks of the season, though a 38.8 percent career strikeout rate in the majors gives him significant batting-average downside.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Contract selected from minors

O'Brien had his contract purchased from Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports. O'Brien was traded from the Dodgers to the Marlins back in June. The 28-year-old has spent the entire season in the minors, slashing a combined .216/.330/.506 with 30 homers across 110 games between Double- and Triple-A. He'll serve as a right-handed power bat off the bench for the Marlins. O'Brien owns a career .176/.228/.446 slash line with six homers across 79 big-league plate appearances.

  • Marlins' Peter O'Brien: Traded to Marlins

The Marlins acquired O'Brien from the Dodgers on Friday, Matthew DeFranks of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. O'Brien appeared in 36 games for the Diamondbacks between the 2015 and 2016 seasons and showed some pop with five home runs, but slashed .176/.228/.446 with 32 strikeouts in 79 plate appearances. The 27-year-old bounced between Double-A and Triple-A last season, and has struggled with a .150/.241/.390 line at Double-A Tulsa in 2018. O'Brien will report to Double-A Jacksonville with his new organization.
