      Free agent reliever Jose Veras said Monday he is talking to four teams, including the Astros, according to the Houston Chronicle. Veras was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Cubs last season before joining the Astros in June. He went 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 34 relief appearances with Houston to finish the season with a 4.50 ERA.

      Jose Veras picks up his first save

      Astros pitcher Jose Veras saved his first game Wednesday against the Yankees. Veras entered with a three-run lead, but managed to make things interesting. With two outs, Veras gave up a single to Brett Gardner, and walked Derek Jeter. With the tying run at the plate, Veras was able to induce a fly out to end the game. Veras lowered his ERA to 2.84 with the outing.

      Astros pitcher Jose Veras earned a win Friday, striking out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his team's 4-3 victory over the Rangers. Veras (2-1) picked up his second win in three August appearances after his offense scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday. He owns a 5.53 ERA and 27:18 K:BB ratio in 27 2/3 innings this season but has delivered a 3.14 ERA since coming back to the Astros.

      Jose Veras gets call from Astros

      Right-hander Jose Veras required just 11 days and two innings pitched at Triple-A Oklahoma City to convince the Astros to promote him. Veras, who was signed on June 15, hurled shutout ball on one hit while striking out four for the RedHawks. He had been released by the Cubs five days earlier after a horrible start to the season. Veras was 21 for 25 in save chances last year.

Veras, who was 0 for 2 in save opportunities, signed a one-year, $3.85 million contract in the offseason, which included a $5.5 million team option for 2014.
