      Andrew Susac among Giants' spring cuts Sunday

      The Giants optioned catcher Andrew Susac, first baseman Adam Duvall, pitcher Hunter Strickland and outfielders Gary Brown and Juan Perez to Triple-A Sacramento Sunday. Susac was the favorite to open the season as the team's No. 2 catcher behind Buster Posey, but Hector Sanchez won the competition, leaving Susac to open the season as the team's starter in Triple-A. The Giants also reassigned catcher Guillermo Quiroz, second baseman Brandon Hicks and pitchers Brett Bochy, Steven Okert and Juan Gutierrez to minor-league camp.

      Giants reveal Sept. 1 callups

      The Giants have announced their list of Sept. 1 callups on Sunday. The team will recall Juan Perez and Michael Kickham from Triple-A. Hunter Strickland will be recalled from Double-A, while Guillermo Quiroz and Chris Dominguez will have their contracts purchased from Triple-A.

      Giants cut seven from big-league camp Friday

      The Giants optioned pitchers Heath Hembree, Erik Cordier and Jake Dunning to Triple-A Fresno Friday. Hembree allowed just one earned run on one hit and two walks in four innings while striking out five in five Cactus League appearances this spring. The Giants also reassigned catcher Guillermo Quiroz, first baseman Mark Minicozzi and pitchers Brett Bochy and Adam Reifer to minor-league camp Friday.

      Giants sign five to minor-league deals

      The Giants have signed catcher Guillermo Quiroz and pitchers Daryl Maday, Mason Tobin, Jason Berken and Caleb Clay to minor-league deals, Baseball America reports. Quiroz hit .186/.237/.302 with one home run and six RBI in 86 at-bats with the Giants last season. Maday went 1-2 with a 4.17 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 39:20 K:BB ratio in 49 2/3 innings between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Fresno. Tobin went 3-0 with a 5.24 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 23:17 K:BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings with Triple-A Fresno. Berken went 12-12 with a 3.80 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 117:46 K:BB ratio in 161 innings over 27 starts with Triple-A Charlotte last season. Clay went 11-5 with a 2.96 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 110:31 K:BB ratio in 158 1/3 innings between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse.

      Giants catcher Guillermo Quiroz has accepted his Triple-A assignment. Quiroz was designated for assignment Thursday. He decided to remain in the organization. Quiroz is hitting .186/.237/.302 in 86 at-bats.

      Giants catcher Guillermo Quiroz was designated for assignment Thursday to clear a roster spot for catcher Hector Sanchez. Quiroz hit .186 with one home run and six RBI in 43 games with the Giants.

      Guillermo Quiroz plays hero for Giants

      Giants backup catcher Guillermo Quiroz smashed a pinch-hit walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday to beat the Dodgers. Quiroz came on for the pitcher spot with one out in the bottom of the 10th and unloaded on a Brandon League pitch to win it. He's now batting .444 on the year as the backup for Buster Posey, who recently hit his own first-career walk-off homer. It was the first HR of the year for Quiroz, and only his second RBI over nine at-bats.

      Giants backup catcher Guillermo Quiroz made his first start since Sept. 19, 2010 on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. He entered the contest having gone 3 for 6 with one RBI in limited action. "You got to be ready," Quiroz told "You're working all the time to get these opportunities. You get here early. You do your routine. You hit in the cage. You do your weight training. You just got to be ready for anything that comes up."

      Guillermo Quiroz has marginal 'role'

      About the only person who probably hasn't forgotten catcher Guillermo Quiroz is on the Giants' roster is manager Bruce Bochy, who is well aware the veteran has appeared in two games with two plate appearances entering Thursday's game against the Brewers. "That's kind of his role right now," Bochy said to "I try to find spots to get him in there. I will say in the little bit he's played, he's had a couple good at-bats."

      Guillermo Quiroz gives Giants another catcher

      The Giants purchased the contract of catcher Guillermo Quiroz from Triple-A Fresno Saturday, bolstering their catching depth with Hector Sanchez recovering from a shoulder injury. Quiroz, who has appeared in two games in the last two years, impressed during spring training. He batted .286 with five doubles in 35 at-bats. He will likely serve as a defensive replacement until Sanchez is at full health.
