Padres OF Melvin Upton gets uptick in playing time with hot bat

Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. will receive the start in center field for a third straight game Saturday against the Rockies. On the heels of a three-hit game Friday, Upton will earn another nod in center field, with rookie Travis Jankowski losing out on at-bats as a result. Upton has performed better with San Diego this season than he did with Atlanta the last two campaigns, but his still-meager .250/.316/.426 line and declining speed still make his $15 million annual salary a relative albatross.

Padres OF Melvin Upton gets two doubles in three-hit outing

Padres outfielder Melvin Upton went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored in a 7-4 loss to Colorado on Friday. Upton made quick work on Friday, as he saw just five pitches in his four at-bats. Since the beginning of July, Upton has put together some formidable numbers. In fact, Upton's batting around .280 with an OPS above .800 since July 8. He may not be completely dead as most fantasy owners expected and he's a candidate to have a resurgence next year, as he's shown All-Star potential in years past.

Melvin Upton, Yonder Alonso atop Padres lineup on Tuesday

The Padres lineup had a little different look Tuesday against the Athletics, as Melvin Upton was in the leadoff spot for the first time this season and Yonder Alonso was batting second for just the second time in 2015. It was also Alonso's first time batting second since coming off the disabled list June 2. Alonso is batting .277 with one home run, two doubles, eight RBI, five runs, five walks and seven strikeouts in 13 games since coming off the disabled list. However, he is mired in a 1-for-20 slump in his last six games. Upton is batting just .100 (1 for 10) in seven games since his activation from the DL. Tuesday was just his third start of the season.
