Rockies' Chad Qualls: Will sign two-year deal with Rockies

Qualls has agreed to a two-year deal with the Rockies. The Astros declined a team option on Qualls in November following a season in which he posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 60 innings while chipping in four saves out of the Houston bullpen. The Rockies also agreed to terms with Jason Motte, and the team's bullpen configuration is not immediately clear, but both Qualls and Motte seem like upgrades over the younger returning options given their experience as late-inning contributors.

Astros pitcher Chad Qualls nearing rehab assignment

Astros pitcher Chad Qualls was recently able to throw a bullpen session and he will pitch in one or two games at Double-A this week, reports the Houston Chronicle. Qualls is on the 15-day disabled list with a pinched nerve in his trapezius and neck. "He's coming along great," manager A.J. Hinch said. "He threw a really good bullpen here in Boston, he played catch again [Sunday]. So that's very encouraging that we've solved the pain he had. Astros closer Luke Gregerson (rest) not available on Wednesday

Astros manager A.J. Hinch confirmed that closer Luke Gregerson will not be available to pitch on Wednesday against the A's. Gregerson has appeared in three of the last four games for the Astros and has given up two runs in two of those performances. Hinch indicated that Neshek, Chad Qualls, Tony Sipp and Josh Fields are all options to close if a save is needed on Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle.
