Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez posts strong effort win over Nationals

Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez (12-9) surrendered only three hits and one run (unearned) in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over the Nationals. He gave up five walks but also struck out five. Jimenez turned in his most dominant performance since an Aug. 8 blanking of the Angels, although his control was typically spotty. The five free passes Jimenez handed out Tuesday were his second-highest total in a game this season. The walks also helped bring about the second-highest pitch count in a game for the veteran right-hander in 2015, with his 110 offerings on Tuesday eclipsed only by the 118 he threw in the aforementioned, eight-inning shutout of Anaheim. Jimenez will attempt to tie his third-highest victory total in a season (13) in his next start which will come against the Red Sox next Sunday.

Orioles pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez takes no-decision Tuesday

Orioles pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 6-5 defeat of the Red Sox, surrendering six hits, four earned runs and three walks in five innings. He also struck out four. Jimenez was relatively sharp in spite of the trio of free passes, throwing 58 of his 91 pitches for strikes and managing to secure first-pitch strikes on an impressive 16 of 24 batters that he faced. He also managed to stay away from the long ball against a potent Red Sox lineup, making the second time in his last three starts he has not surrendered a gopher ball after yielding one in four consecutive starts to close out August. Jimenez sports an 11-9 record in 2015, but once again likely hampered his chances for a better mark with a 1.37 WHIP rate that is right in line with his career number of 1.36 in that category.

Orioles frustrating SP Ubaldo Jimenez blows lead against Royals

The maddeningly inconsistent Ubaldo Jimenez didn't need much time to turn victory into defeat for the Orioles on Monday night in Kansas City. Jimenez was cruising along through five innings, then managed just two more outs before he was out. He finished having yielded seven runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts. The right-hander with the complicated windup and delivery gave up the cycle in the sixth. A two-run homer by Eric Hosmer tied the game and three-run triple to light-hitting Omar Infante gave the Royals a lead they would not relinquish. Jimenez has managed just two quality starts over his last nine outings, during which time his ERA has soared from 2.81 to a season-high 4.26.
