      The Tampa Bay Rays activated several players off the 60-day disabled list on Monday as they were placed on the 40-man roster in procedural moves. The Rays activated pitchers Jeff Niemann, who missed all of 2013 after shoulder surgery, Alex Colome, who had a strained elbow, and Juan Carlos Oviedo, who missed all of 2013 returning from Tommy John. The Rays also reinstated outfielder Brandon Guyer, who never played this season due to a broken finger.

      Jeff Niemann making progress

      Rays pitcher Jeff Niemann has been progressing steadily in his rehab from a shoulder injury, according to the Tampa Tribune. Niemann visited the club Monday, and was excited about what he's been able to accomplish thus far. Niemann has been increasing the distance on his throwing excercises, and is now able to throw from 90 feet. Niemann isn't expected to be ready until Spring Training, but said he was ahead of schedule in his rehab.

      Jeff Niemann will be ready next year

      As the Rays took the field Monday to play in the wild-card-game deciding contest against the Rangers in Texas, injured pitcher Jeff Niemann (shoulder) met with the team, reports. Niemann said he hopes to be ready for spring training. He underwent surgery in early April to repair the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. Niemann believes he's ahead of schedule in his recovery right now. Niemann said he hopes to be in someone's opening day rotation next season. "The way things are going," Niemann said, "the timetable really looks well for next year."

      The Rays' pitching staff was dealt a severe blow after the team announced Jeff Niemann will likely miss the remainder of the season with a right shoulder injury. Niemann, who did not make an appearance this year, is scheduled to have surgery Wednesday to correct some labrum and rotator cuff issues. "He feels he can't compete at this level without it," Tampa Bay athletic trainer Ron Porterfield told "He feels like right now it's bothering him too much that he just doesn't have his confidence that he can do what he needs to do."
