Last year he split time between the Red Sox and the A's and compiled a 4.75 ERA and just 30 strikeouts in 47.1 innings.

Athletics pitcher Edward Mujica able to throw off mound

Athletics pitcher Edward Mujica (leg) threw off a mound Wednesday and could pitch again this season, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. Mujica has been out since Sept. 14 with a mysterious leg injury, however manager Bob Melvin believes the 31-year-old could pitch again for the A's this season. If he returns, it's unlikely he will pitch in any high-leverage situations, however it's still a positive sign for Mujica considering he was supposed to be out for a considerable amount of time.

Melvin frustrated by meltdown of Athletics closer Edward Mujica

The search for a permanent closer seems to have Athletics manager Bob Melvin a bit frustrated. His latest frustration came as a result of a ninth-inning meltdown by Edward Mujica against Houston on Sunday. Mujica gave up a three-run homer to Colby Rasmus that turned a lead into a deficit. Fortunately, Oakland rallied in the bottom of the inning to win. "Like it's been all year for us, we're going to try to find the best option we can," Melvin told the San Francisco Chronicle. Mujica was the heir apparent when Tyler Clippard was traded to the Mets, though lefty Drew Pomeranz has also been considered. It remains to be seen if the former has lost his hold on the job.
