      Nationals' Brendan Ryan: Signs with Nationals

      Ryan agreed to a minor league deal with the Nationals on Tuesday, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports. Ryan had been traded to the Cubs earlier in the offseason, but the veteran was released shortly after. He'll get an invitation to spring training as part of the deal, but the 33-year-old figures to serve primarily as organizational depth up the middle of the infield.

He was a late addition to the trade that sent Starlin Castro to the Yankees; however, after the Cubs signed pitcher Edgar Olmos on Wednesday, they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Ryan will hit free agency and could sign with a team looking to shore up its middle infield.

      Yankees manager Joe Girardi isn't ready to commit to using a platoon situation at shortstop and second base, according to The Journal News. With Brendan Ryan off the disabled list, the Yankees could use Ryan at shortstop and Jose Pirela at second base when a left-hander is on the mound, and start Didi Gregorius at shortstop and Stephen Drew at second base against righties. "We'll see," Girardi said prior to Wednesday's game against the Nationals. "We'll go day by day. That's kind of how, to me, you have to approach the game. You have to see what's going on, when guys necessarily need a day off. We'll just go day by day."
