      Carlos Corporan: Opts for free agency

      Corporan (thumb) refused his outright assignment Tuesday and instead opted for free agency, the Rangers' official site reports. Corporan was outrighted last Wednesday, but rather than stick with the Rangers, he'll test the open market. In 33 games with the big club this season, the catcher fell below the Mendoza Line, recording a .178/.244/.299 line with three homers in 107 at-bats.

      Corporan was outrighted from the 40-man roster Wednesday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Corporan underwent surgery last week on his injured left thumb, however he is expected to be healthy for the start of spring training. The 31-year-old registered 107 at-bats with the Rangers this season, but he was incredibly inefficient at the plate, recording a .178/.244/.299 slash line to go along with three home runs (second lowest total when recording 100+ at-bats in his career). It remains to be seen whether he will accept his assignment to Triple-A Round Rock or try to sign with another club during the offseason.

Corporan missed about six weeks during the season with a left thumb sprain, but was able to return in September.
