An inability to work out a trade involving embattled point guard Deron Williams has motivated the Nets to release him. General manager Billy King made that announcement Saturday, per NBA.com.
Williams, who is expected to sign a two-year, $10 million deal with his hometown Mavericks on Monday, per the Dallas Morning News, proved disappointing with Brooklyn after a stellar career with Utah. He bottomed out last year by averaging 13.0 points, his lowest total since his rookie season.
He shot easily a career-worst 38.7 percent from the floor and averaged just 6.6 assists per game.
Williams would have a chance with Dallas to replace another backcourt disappointment in Rajon Rondo, who left to sign with Sacramento.
