Player Outlook

With four incumbent starters out of the picture, there are going to be plenty of opportunities for playing time in Portland, and that should be a welcome change of pace for Maurice Harkless. Harkless showed legitimate NBA skills in his first two seasons in Orlando, but inexplicably found his role substantially reduced last season, as he played in just 45 games and averaged only 15.0 minutes in them. He struggled mightily when he did play, which is why he came so cheap to the Blazers, as he shot just 39.9 percent from the field and 17.9 percent on 3-pointers in his limited time. However, he also added 1.7 steals per-36 minutes and shot 38.3 percent from 3-point range just one season before, so there is still reason for optimism. As a late-round flier with sleeper potential, you can do worse than a player of Harkless' skill and pedigree.

  • Trail Blazers forward Maurice Harkless scored 14 points (5-6 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 2-6 FT) and added six rebounds in 24 minutes during the Trail Blazers' preseason opener Monday against the Kings. After seeing his playing time wane in Orlando since his rookie season of 2012-13, Harkless landed with the Trail Blazers in the offseason and is expected to receive every opportunity to readjust the trajectory of his career. A supremely athletic wing player, Harkless should push both Al-Farouq Aminu and Allen Crabbe for minutes at small forward this season, though it's not immediately clear how coach Terry Stotts plans on distributing the minutes. The preseason performance of all three players might ultimately dictate who earns the greater share of playing time.

  • The Magic traded forward Maurice Harkless to the Trail Blazers for a 2020 second round draft pick (Protected from picks 31 through 55), the team announced on Tuesday. "We are excited to add Maurice to our talented core of young players," said Blazers president of basketball operations Neil Olshey. "His best basketball days are ahead of him and we look forward to guiding his development." Harkless averaged 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 45 games last season.

  • Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle denied benching forward Chandler Parsons late in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's win, explaining he wanted to go with a quicker lineup, according to ESPN Dallas. With under six minutes remaining in a tight game, Magic forward Maurice Harkless beat Parsons for a baseline dunk. Carlisle then put forward Al-Farouq Aminu into the game and Parsons sat for virtually the final 5:26."I just wanted a quicker guy in there," Carlisle said. "With Aminu, you get some more options. Parsons didn't have a great night, but it happens. You're not going to get 30 points every night and sometimes your teammates got to pick you up. We had other guys step up.""A little surprised [by Carlisle's decision], but not really," Parsons said. "We have a lot of players that can do different things. Any given night it can be someone different. The best thing is we won the game."Parsons entered the game red hot, averaging 23.7 points over his previous three contests.

  • The Magic are looking to unload SF Moe Harkless before Thursday's NBA trade deadline. According to a report by USA Today's Jeff Zillgitt, the Magic are willing to deal Harkless for "minimal return". Harkless is averaging 3.4 points in 13.8 minutes for the Magic this season. His scoring and playing time have fallen steadily since he averaged 8.2 points in 26 minutes as a rookie.

  • The Magic will list Maurice Harkless and Andrew Nicholson as inactive for Wednesday's game against the Pistons, according to the team's website. Nicholson has already missed the past four games, so the news shouldn't come as a surprise for him. Harkless had been seeing time with Tobias Harris sidelined, but will not play now that Harris is ready to return.
