McCallum saw one minute of action and failed to score in the Spurs' 94-84 Monday win in New York. Most of McCallum's playing time in the regular season has come in garbage time, and he hasn't seen much time at all. He'll continue to be slotted behind Tony Parker and Patty Mills on the depth chart and opportunities will be very difficult to come by for McCallum in his first year with the Spurs.
McCallum tallied eight points (4-9 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 0-2 FT) and four rebounds over 17 minutes in Tuesday's preseason loss to the Suns. After signing a one-year contract with San Antonio this offseason, McCallum is ticketed for a role as the team's third-string point guard. Coach Gregg Popovich's frequent choice to rest Tony Parker for one game of back-to-back sets may allow McCallum to see an uptick in minutes in such scenarios, but that alone won't afford him enough playing time to notice sustained fantasy value in season-long formats.
The Spurs dealt a future second-round pick to the Kings in exchange for point guard Ray McCallum, per the San Antonio Express-News. McCallum, a second-round pick in 2013, averaged 7.4 points and 2.8 assists for the Kings last season. An offensive-minded point guard, he will have to improve his defensive tendencies to make an impact with the Spurs, who do need backcourt help after losing Cory Joseph and Marco Belinelli.
With guard Darren Collison being sidelined for the near future, Kings coach George Karl said he plans to split Collison's role between Ray McCallum Jr. and Andre Miller, reports CowBellKingdom.com. "I think right now probably my desire is to split them, probably 24-24 is kind of in mind what it's going to end up," Karl said. "Probably defensively, Ray would be in the game when it counts and [Miller] would be in the game probably offensively. At the end of the game, probably Andre has more experience, but Ray's got to learn how to play there too."
Kings guard Darren Collison has been ruled out of Wednesday's game against the Grizzlies, the team announced. It will be the seventh straight game Collison has missed because of a hip injury. Guard Ray McCallum Jr. has seen his minutes increase with Collison sidelined.
