The Knicks have waived D.J. Mbenga and Orlando Sanchez Friday. Neither player traveled with the team Friday, and were let go. Sanchez was with St. John's last season. Mbenga didn't factor into the team's long-term plans.
Center D.J. Mbenga has agreed to a deal to play professional basketball in China. Mbenga is playing with Qingdao.
The Hornets will be without starting center Emeka Okafor for 1-3 weeks with an injury and the team will have to turn elsewhere for low-post production. The Hornets had Aaron Gray coming back early from his own injury to help out. The other possibilities in the post are D.J. Mbenga, David Andersen and Jason Smith, who started and played quite well. Coach Monty Williams did not detail how he planned to use each prior to Tuesday's game against the Wizards but Mbenga only played three minutes. He only had one rebound as his only discernible stat.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Hornets C D.J. Mbenga has lost his spot in the rotation to Aaron Gray. Mbenga hasn't played since Dec. 31. "D.J. just knows he has to be ready when his time is called, but Aaron has been pretty good for us,'' coach Monty Williams said. "He's got a lot better understanding of what we want to do, he knows all of our sets, and he's big. He didn't play all year, but he kept working and is a good soldier.''
Hornets center D.J. Mbenga logged 12 minutes on Friday night against the Thunder after missing two straight games with a stomach virus. He missed both of his shots from the field and grabbed just one rebound. Mbenga would add one block in the Hornets' 92-97 loss.
