Cleveland Cavaliers' Timofey Mozgov Plays 21 minutes Thursday

Mozgov (knee) played 21 minutes in the Cavs' preseason opener against the Hawks, scoring 13 points (6-7 FG, 1-2 FT) and reeling in five boards.Mozgov isn't feeling any discomfort in his right knee after undergoing a debridement procedure during the offseason, positioning him to fill the starting center role for the Cavaliers when the regular season opens. The big man was a key contributor to the Cavs' run to the NBA Finals last spring, averaging 26.5 minutes per game during the playoffs, but the returns of Anderson Varejao and Kevin Love from injury could result in a small decline in Mozgov's playing time in 2015-16.

Cavaliers center Timofey Mozgov says he'll be ready for opener

Cavaliers center Timofey Mozgov said Monday that he'll be ready for the team's opener on October 27, Chris Haynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Mozgov had his knee cleaned up back in July, but he said he's nearing full strength and does not expect to be limited when the regular season begins. The 29-year-old excelled with the Cavs after a mid-season trade from Denver, averaging 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting a career-best 59 percent from the floor, up from 50.4 percent in 35 games with the Nuggets. With Anderson Varejao (Achilles) expected back in the fold, Mozgov could see a bit more competition for minutes, but the Tristan Thompson contract situation is ultimately of more consequence. If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement, a holdout could be in Thompson's future, which would obviously clear the way for a larger role for Mozgov.

LeBron on Mozgov: Best big guy I've played with since Ilgauskas

The Cavaliers have won four straight games after beating the Jazz, 106-92, on Wednesday. While everyone is providing their two cents about what is driving the Cavs surge, star forward LeBron James has his own theory as well. James feels the addition of Timofey Mozgov has been a big reason why the Cavs are beginning to play better. Mozgov is averaging 10.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in seven games since his acquisition from Denver. "It's funny, I was talking to my friend the other day and I said he's probably the best, as far as big, true big," James said, per Cleveland.com. "You know, Chris Bosh is a great big, Kevin Love is a great big. But I'm talking about a true, 7-foot, big guy. He's probably the best one I've played with since Z (Zydrunas Ilgauskas). "They have different skill sets, but they both have skill. They know how to play. Some times you get a lot of bigs that are just big. He knows how to play and it's great to have him out there." Mozgov has had double-doubles in back-to-back games. "He's going to be on the scouting report," James said of Mozgov. "Once you're on the scouting report, you start hitting the opposing team's scouting report then you know you're starting to do some good things. And he's going to be on that. He's a walking double-double."

Cavs' Blatt on recently acquired Mozgov: ''He's a great fit for our team'

Cavaliers center Timofey Mozgov had quite the home debut during Monday's 108-94 win against the Bulls. Mozgov, who was acquired in a Jan. 7 trade with Denver, totaled 15 points and 15 rebounds in his first home game with Cleveland. He is averaging 9.3 points and 9.0 rebounds in six games since his acquisition. "I think since he's came in here, he's applied himself extremely well," coach Dave Blatt said, per the team's official website. "He's fit right in and he's a great fit for our team. The skill set that he has and his activity level is just a great fit for our team. We'll miss Andy Varejao for a good period of time. We played not a short period of time without our starting center but obviously when Timo (Timofey) came in, he filled a big void and he's just applied himself extremely well."
