Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Embraces new role in 2015

Dieng saw more time at power forward than center during the 2015-16 season, and set a career-high season average of 10.1 points per game. Since coming into the league, Dieng has made a name for himself as a lanky defender who understands how to play help-side defense at the NBA level and protect the paint against smaller slashers, though struggles at times when matched up one-on-one against bigger and stronger big men down low. In 2015, Dieng appeared in every game for the first time in his professional career, and while he set a new season-high in points, field goal percentage and steals, he found less boards and swatted fewer shots than he did in 2014. However, the presence of Rookie of the Year candidate Karl-Anthony Towns had something to do with that. With Towns in the lineup, Dieng played more power forward than center for the first time in his career and was allowed to expand his offensive repertoire at the expense of his defensive production. Looking ahead to 2016, expect Dieng to continue to be deployed at the four. Newly-hired head coach Tom Thibodeau reportedly pushed for the Bulls to draft Dieng over Tony Snell when he coached Chicago in 2016, and will assuredly find a way to put Dieng in a position to succeed.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Manages double-double in Thursday win

Dieng collected 18 points (7-15 FG, 4-6 3Pt), 13 rebounds, two assists and a block over 34 minutes in Thursday's 105-97 victory over the Kings. After a stretch of four single-digit outings in five games largely promoted by a downturn in minutes, Dieng encouragingly received over 30 minutes and recorded his best point total since compiling 18 against the Wizards on Mar. 25. His rebound total was also notably his highest in over two months, as he appeared to be the dominant frontcourt force that he often served as during February and March. It remains to be seen if coach Sam Mitchell will opt to give Dieng enough playing time over the final few games to continue producing at Thursday's clip.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Minutes trending down

Dieng played 19 minutes and accrued 10 points (5-8 FG), five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal during Tuesday's 124-117 overtime victory over the Warriors. Dieng has been seeing 30-plus minutes for most of his stint as the fill-in starter in the frontcourt for the ailing Kevin Garnett (knee), but coach Sam Mitchell has de-emphasized the third-year big man of late, giving him no more than 23 minutes in any of the last four games. His reduced role has resulted in more court time of late for Nemanja Bjelica, whose three-point shooting ability gives the Timberwolves a little more spacing when Bjelica works as a power forward next to Karl-Anthony Towns. Look for Mitchell to stick with this usage pattern for the rest of the season, limiting Dieng's appeal as a DFS option.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Delivers double-double with full line Wednesday

Dieng dropped 16 points (7-10 FG, 2-3 FT), 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks in 37 minutes during the Timberwolves' 113-104 win against the Kings on Wednesday. Dieng was excellent on Wednesday, dominating alongside Karl-Anthony Towns in the Timberwolves' win. Over the last five contests, Dieng is contributing 12.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, two blocks, and 1.8 steals in 33 minutes per game.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Posts near double-double despite bothersome hip

Dieng (hip) supplied 13 points (3-11 FG, 7-8 FT), nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block over 36 minutes in Friday's 116-111 loss to the Rockets. The third-year pro shook off the lingering soreness of a hip injury suffered in Wednesday's victory over the Grizzlies to come just a rebound shy of his first double-double since Feb. 22. It was notably the fifth game in March that Dieng has come with one just one board of the feat, but he did manage his fourth straight double-digit scoring effort, and fifth in the last six games. Dieng ha served as a strong multi-category producer since prior to the All-Star break save for a couple of outlier performances, and is now averaging 11.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.6 steals in nine March games.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Will play Friday

Dieng (hip) will play in Friday's tilt with the Rockets. Dieng injured his hip in Wednesday's win over the Grizzlies. Although he has experienced some soreness, he says he'll be ready to take the court come Friday night. He could see minutes slightly monitored, in which case Nemanja Bjelica, Adreian Payne, and Damjan Rudez to see extended minutes.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Probable for Friday's game against the Grizzlies

Dieng (hip) is listed as probable for Friday's game against the Rockets, Jerry Zgoda of Star Tribune reports. Dieng injured his hip in Wednesday night's game against Memphis. While the sore hip doesn't appear to be serious, he should still be monitored with both Kevin Garnett (knee) and Nikola Pekovic (ankle) out. Should Dieng miss Friday's game, look for Nemanja Bjelica, Adreian Payne, and Damjan Rudez to see extended minutes.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Scores team-high 25 in Friday's win

Dieng scored 25 points (7-12 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 11-11 FT) while adding nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 31 minutes during Friday's win over the Thunder. The 11 makes from the free throw line were a career high for Dieng, who continues to alternate big performances with mediocre ones. He's still supplied multiple blocks in eight of his last nine games, however, averaging 12.4 points, 7.5 boards, 2.0 blocks and 1.4 steals over that stretch, making him a better fantasy play in weekly and season-long formats than in DFS.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Bounces back with 12 points, nine rebounds Monday

Dieng bounced back in Monday's 108-103 loss to the Hornets, posting 12 points (5-9 FG, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks during 32 minutes. Dieng managed just four points and three rebounds Saturday against the Nets, so seeing him get back to double-digit scoring was encouraging. Since having a career month in February, the month of March hasn't exactly treated Dieng well. He's averaging 8.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in the last four games.

Timberwolves' Gorgui Dieng: Blocks three shots in 24 minutes during Saturday's win

Dieng tallied four points (2-4 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 0-2 FT), three rebounds, two assists, and three blocks in 24 minutes during Saturday's win against the Nets. It was a quiet day for Dieng that was somewhat salvaged by his impressive block total. We've seen a noticeable downturn since the third-year bigman notched eight double-doubles in 10 games earlier this calendar year. Still, Dieng is a well-rounded contributor who has been a reliable source of points and rebounds for most of the season.
