Mavericks' Charlie Villanueva: Leaves team to attend birth of child

Villanueva left the Mavericks on Wednesday to attend the birth of his second child, Earl K. Sneed of reports. The Mavericks are playing in Boston on Wednesday but they'll have to do it without the efforts of Villanueva who's averaged just over 15 minutes per game after 10 total outings. Chandler Parsons could finally see extended time on the court during his absence, although coach Rick Carlisle may still keep Parsons on a minutes restriction while utilizing rookie Justin Anderson instead. It would be highly unlikely for Villanueva to also miss Friday's game back in Dallas against the Jazz, but he is still dealing with a minor foot injury which could pose some problems for his viability even when he rejoins the team.

      Mavericks' Charlie Villanueva: Misses practice

Villanueva missed practice Tuesday due to a minor foot injury, Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News reports. It's unclear when Villanueva suffered the injury, as Sefko notes that the forward appeared to be fine after Monday's contest. Regardless, the ailment appears to be fairly minor, so consider Villanueva questionable to play Wednesday night.

Mavericks' Charlie Villanueva: Returns to bench role Monday

Villanueva was limited to three points (1-5 FG, 1-2 3Pt) and three rebounds over eight minutes in Monday's loss to the 76ers. This is a more typical nightly performance from Villanueva, who may have piqued some light interest after scoring a season-high 19 over 25 minutes in Saturday's win against the Rockets. Villanueva only entered the starting lineup Saturday because Wesley Matthews, Chandler Parsons, and Dirk Nowitzki were all being rested for the second game of a back-to-back set, but with all three players back in action Monday, Villanueva predictably saw his role marginalized.

Mavericks' Charlie Villanueva: Scores 19 in Saturday's win

Villanueva scored 19 points (8-16 FG, 3-7 3Pt) with five rebounds and three blocks in 25 minutes during Saturday's win over the Rockets. He got the start at power forward with Dirk Nowitzki getting the night off, and Villanueva responded with his best performance of the season. The veteran is primarily a bench player at this stage of his career, but as a stretch four he's capable of heating up from outside and supplying value when he gets the court time.
