Mavericks PF Charlie Villanueva hoping to revive career

Mavericks power forward Charlie Villanueva has found himself in the unfamiliar position of fighting for a roster spot. The team already has 15 guaranteed contracts. "I can't get satisfied at all," Villanueva told the team website. "I've got to keep grinding and keep working, keep getting better every day. ... I've never been in the situation before, being in the league for nine years. But sometimes you have to take two steps back to take three forward. ... Now I've got to build myself up and reinvent myself again. It's not a problem. I'm actually looking forward to the opportunity." Villanueva experienced greater struggles with time after signing a free agent contract with Detroit. He has battled nagging injuries that limited him to just 20 games with the Pistons last season while averaging career-low numbers at 4.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and .3 assists per game. "I had problems with my ankle and my back, but I'm healthy, feeling good and at 100 percent," Villanueva added. "I think injuries set me back a little bit, and a little bit had to do with what was going on up there in Detroit. But those things are behind me now."
