If there's a real problem with Kelvin Benjamin's conditioning, you wouldn't know it by how he looked on the field against the Titans.
His targets in relation to Devin Funchess? That's a little trickier, but not necessarily bad.
Benjamin was the target of Cam Newton's first three passes, catching two for first-down gains of 13-plus yards. On both plays it was so evident that his beastly 6-foot-5 size makes him a matchup nightmare for pretty much every defensive back in the league.
Funchess, 6-foot-4, also has a size advantage over defensive backs, making him just as tough to tackle as Benjamin. He just didn't gain as many yards on his two receptions as Benjamin did.
So if both guys are towering giants, what's the difference between them? Well, Benjamin probably has slight edges when it comes to hands, vertical jumping and speed.
But Funchess isn't the one coming back from a torn ACL. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said recently he envisions Benjamin getting 30 to 35 snaps in the team's Week 1 game at Denver, and that type of limited work played out in the preseason game at Tennessee when Benjamin hit the field for only nine snaps.
Benjamin defended his conditioning recently, telling The Charlotte Observer he hasn't competed against people or run as much as he had in camp when he was rehabbing from his injury. Benjamin, along with his receivers coach, is confident he'll be in good shape sooner than later.
Benjamin still has mass appeal. We've seen him get over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. Funchess didn't come close last season and is a safe bet not to come close this season so long as Benjamin and Greg Olsen are healthy. But Benjamin might not improve much on those rookie-year numbers because of Funchess taking some of Cam Newton's attention away from him.
It feels right to get Benjamin in Round 4 and Funchess in Round 10, but it's probably not a great choice to land both since it's unlikely the Panthers passing game can support them both. If you're at all squeamish about Benjamin's outlook, then Funchess should be a late-round target.
