Head coach Sean McDermott suggested the Bills are not sure if they will pick up the fifth-year option on Watkins' (foot) rookie contract, ESPN's Mike Rodak reports.

The team has until May 2 to decide on the $13.528 million option, which seems like a pretty obvious decision even though Watkins only played 21 games the past two seasons. The No. 4 overall pick from the 2014 draft has been fantastic when healthy, looking every bit the part of a true No. 1 receiver. Watkins had surgery on his troublesome left foot in mid-January, with the expectation he'll be available for training camp. Barring unexpected news of a recovery setback, the Bills figure to pick up the fifth-year option. The team might even start discussions about a long-term extension, perhaps hoping to lock Watkins down while his value is at a relative low point. Should he bounce back strong to enjoy a healthy and productive 2017 season, Watkins likely would expect to receive one of the largest non-quarterback contracts in the league.
