Hanna (knee) has decided to have knee surgery and may not be ready for the start of the regular season, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.

Hanna was expected to be the unquestioned No. 2 tight end for the Cowboys, behind Jason Witten, but now that he's facing the very real possibility of remaining on the PUP list at the start of the season, therefore missing at least six games, Gavin Escobar and Geoff Swaim could make the team to start the year. The positive for Hanna is that his knee injury is relatively minor, as far as knee injuries can go, and it still remains unlikely that he'll miss a majority of the season.
