Nick Foles takes a big hit with DeSean Jackson gone
The Eagles cut DeSean Jackson on Friday, and Nick Foles will suffer without his No. 1 receiver
Right after the first wave of free agency was over -- when Toby Gerhart signed with the Jaguars and James Jones landed in Oakland -- I wrote a review of 10 winners and losers. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, at the time, was a winner.
That is no longer the case.
The Eagles, after giving Foles a new toy in Darren Sproles and bringing back Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin, who Foles never played with in 2013 because of a torn ACL, took away his best weapon when they cut DeSean Jackson. Apparently a 27-year-old coming off a career year is expendable, but that's the line that's blurred with on-field talent compared to off-field concerns, which is a story for another time.
Jackson will land on his feet with no shortage of suitors. As for Foles, losing Jackson hurts. According to ESPN, Foles targeted Jackson more than any other receiver (70 times) last season and completed 71.4 percent of those passes to him. Jackson was a huge reason why Foles finished as the No. 11 Fantasy quarterback in standard leagues.
Foles goes from a potential Top 5 Fantasy quarterback to barely a Top 10 option. I was already concerned with Foles taking a step back because he threw just two interceptions last year, but the potential of Sproles, Maclin, Cooper, LeSean McCoy, Zach Ertz and Jackson was too hard to overlook.
Now, with Jackson gone, don't be surprised if Foles is a bust. He's someone I would reluctantly draft as a starter, and I would target a high-end No. 2 guy to pair with him like Ben Roethlisberger or Philip Rivers.
We'll see what the Eagles do to replace Jackson, but this loss hurts Foles. He's no longer an top-tier Fantasy quarterback coming into the season.
