Mallett was released by the Texans on Tuesday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Mallett would have been released a day earlier had head coach Bill O'Brien not been overruled by GM Rick Smith, but all parties ultimately decided that it was time to move on from Mallett after the quarterback missed the Texans' team flight to Miami last week. It remains to be seen where Mallett will land next, and his release means the Texans will now be in the market for a new backup quarterback.
