Chiefs defensive back Steve Gregory announced his retirement from the NFL Saturday, via his management agency. Gregory signed with the Chiefs just last week, but said in a statement that his decision was motivated by family obligations. Gregory appeared in 111 games over eight seasons, including 54 as a starter. He finishes his career with three sacks, seven interceptions and 278 tackles recorded.
On the same day safety Eric Berry suffered an ankle injury, the Chiefs signed veteran safety Steve Gregory. Gregory played in 26 games and started 23 for the Patriots the past two seasons, registering 116 tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles.
The Patriots are expected to release safety Steve Gregory on Friday, reports the Boston Globe. His agent, David Canter, announced the move via Twitter. Gregory, who started 23 games for the Patriots the last two seasons, is a salary-cap victim. His cap number increased to $3.683 million for 2014 based on play-time markers, but the Patriots save $2.85 million of that by cutting him before next season, the final year of his deal.
The following players on the injury report have been ruled active for the Patriots in a playoff clash Saturday night against the Colts: quarterback Tom Brady (right shoulder), wide receiver Danny Amendola (groin), wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins (hip), running back Shane Vereen (groin), defensive back Devin McCourty (concussion), defensive back Steve Gregory (finger, knee), linebacker Dane Fletcher (groin), defensive back Alfonzo Dennard (knee, shoulder) and defensive back Kyle Arrington (groin).
Nine Patriots are listed as probable for the Sunday clash against visiting Indianapolis. The offensive players on that list are wide receiver Danny Amendola (groin), quarterback Tom Brady (shoulder), running back Shane Vereen (groin) and offensive linemen Logan Mankins and Will Svitek, both with ankle injuries. The defensive probables are cornerback Kyle Arrington (groin), linebacker Dane Fletcher (groin), safeties Devin McCourty (concussion) and Steve Gregory (finger/knee).
