Berry and the Chiefs are unlikely to reach agreement on an extension prior to Fridays deadline for franchise-tagged players, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the two sides remain far apart in negotiations, but it's still possible a deal could happen Friday. If not, Berry will play out 2016 under his $10.806 million franchise-tag salary, and then be able to hit free agency next offseason. He played all 16 games last year, recording 61 tackles (55 solo), two interceptions and 10 passes defended.

Berry, who returned to the field in 2015 after battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, earned his fourth Pro Bowl nod in the process, while also being named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year. The Chiefs' starting free safety recorded 61 tackles and two picks in 16 games this past season, his sixth with the team.

After missing a the 2014 campaign due to a bout with cancer, Berry emerged better than ever, and returned to his previous form in 2015. He'll likely put his name in the hat for the Comeback Player of the Year award alongside teammate Derrick Johnson, but he will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. It seems likely the Chiefs will make a push to re-sign Berry, but there's no guarantee he will be back in Kansas City for 2016.
The Chiefs announced that safety Eric Berry has been medically cleared, after a battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Berry was diagnosed in December and completed treatment in June. He'll return to practice on Wednesday.
