  • Eagles running back Ryan Mathews rushed 25 times for 108 yards and caught two passes on four targets for 20 receiving yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Jets, though he lost a fumble. Starting in place of the injured DeMarco Murray (hamstring), Mathews had a lot of success against a Jets defense that had been very stingy this season, particularly against the run. His 23-yard receiving touchdown was on a one on one with linebacker Demario Davis, who had no shot at stopping the running back. Backup Darren Sproles scored on a short-yardage situation, but Mathews is likely to get more of those touches if Murray has to miss any more time. Murray was questionable for the game and originally expected to play, but he apparently wasn't able to do enough in pregame warmups to warrant playing. If he has to continue sitting, Mathews will start Week 4 against the Redskins.

  • Eagles RB DeMarco Murray (hamstring) is expected to play Sunday against the Jets, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Murray is officially listed as questionable after missing practice Thursday, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport notes Murray's playing time will not be changed due to the ailment. Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles are also expected to get touches, and the Jets' defense has been excellent so far this season, so a huge breakout for Murray is a tough expectation.

  • Eagles running back Ryan Mathews only received three rushing attempts in Monday's loss to the Falcons, but he was able to reach the endzone. Mathews scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished the contest with four rushing yards on three attempts. Mathews was also targeted four times and caught three receptions for 24 yards.

  • With DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles on the roster, the Eagles have a plethora of running backs with NFL experience and the question on everyone's mind is: How will coach Chip Kelly split up the playing time? Murray, who signed a five-year contract reportedly worth $42 million in the offseason, was asked his opinion on the matter Tuesday. "I don't think it will be alternating series," Murray said, per "But [Mathews] is a quality back, great guy, works extremely hard. I'm sure he'll get his fair share of touches. But I don't know how the rotation will be yet, we haven't touched on it." Murray said he is unsure how many snaps he will get in the third preseason games against the Packers on Saturday, but it could be a good indication on how he will be used during the regular season since it is the penultimate preseason game. "I think we're approaching it like a regular game," Murray said. "You can't go out there with a preseason mindset. We're focused, whether it's playing one snap or 40 snaps."

  • Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur revealed on Wednesday that the team plans to divide the backfield touches between free-agent signees DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews, the Delaware County Daily Times reports. "They're two really fine players," Shurmur said at a coaches availability. "They're two guys that have been starters in places that they've been and they're going to come here and kind of share the role. I think that's terrific that that's their mindset. It shows us that you've got really, really fine players that understand it's important to be a good teammate. Any time you can add good players to a unit you make yourself better because you need more than one to play the year." Murray signed a five-year, $40-million contract after a breakthrough season with the Cowboys in 2014. Mathews, a former first-round pick, signed a three-year, $11-million deal after being plagued by injuries in 2014. "As time's gone on I think at running back, I really believe it takes a village," Shurmur said. "If you play the season you need one, two, three and maybe four guys. They're a key part of what we do offensively. So to have a group that we feel has improved here in the offseason, now it's just a matter of getting them all up to speed as quickly as we can so they can master what we're doing."
