  • Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis was dumped by Cincinnati before the 2014 regular season. He did not land with another organization. Perhaps the NFL was trying to tell him something. But he has not accepted it. He believes he's worthy of playing in the league and he's trying to prove it. The 30-year-old Ellis has been staying in shape and seeking employment. "Oh, I'm ready," he told ESPN. "I've been training. I call them my 'Green-Ellis two-a-days.' I'm boxing, running hills, doing all kinds of football drills. For five weeks now, twice a day, working out like crazy." Green-Ellis became increasingly less productive as his career wore on. He rushed for 1,008 yards, a 4.4 per-carry average and 13 touchdowns for New England in 2010. By 2013 he was down to 3.4 YPC and seven scores for the Bengals. He could latch on to a team after Week 1, when teams will not have to guarantee his salary for the entire season.

  • The release of Bengals former featured back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is not the only significant move that will be made by NFL teams involving veterans, per CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. La Canfora is speculating that the Browns could part with Nate Burleson and that the Jets might let go of fellow wide receiver Stephen Hill. The former has been limited by injury in the preseason while the latter has proven disappointing throughout his young career. Also on the bubble, according to La Canfora, is Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, though he is likely to stay because of the team's possible decision to keep three players at that position.

  • BenJarvus Green-Ellis shown the door by Bengals
    By Marty Gitlin

As many expected, the Bengals have cut veteran running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis. The performance of rookie Jeremy Hill in the preseason was a motivating factor in forcing Green-Ellis out. Green-Ellis was the team's featured back in 2013, which he finished with a meager 3.4 YPC average on 220 carries, though he did score seven touchdowns. Giovani Bernard has already been pegged as the top back for Cincinnati this season with Hill in line for significant work.

    By Larry Hartstein

ESPN.com's latest projection has the Bengals cutting veteran running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis and keeping second-year pro Rex Burkhead instead. Green-Ellis did not play in the third preseason game due to a stomach virus, and he was in for just three plays the week before.
