The Cowboys got down to the 75-man roster limit Tuesday. They waived receiver Chris Boyd, punter Tom Hornsey, long snapper Casey Kreiter, defensive end Adewale Ojomo and guard Wayne Tribue, and released quarterback Caleb Hanie. Dallas waived these players with injury designations: tight end Jordan Najvar, safety Matt Johnson, cornerbacks Justin Green and Johnny Thomas, and linebacker DeVonte Holloman. Defensive end Ben Gardner was placed on IR, and defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was put on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.
New Cowboys quarterback Caleb Hanie hails from Forney, Tex., and grew up rooting for the team. "It's a blessing," Hanie told ESPNDallas. "It's surreal. A little big, it's a childhood team. You dream about playing (for the Cowboys)." The Cowboys signed Hanie because they aren't sure whether Kyle Orton will return for the 2014 season. Tony Romo is rehabbing from back surgery. If Orton comes back, Brandon Weeden likely would be the No. 3 QB ahead of Hanie.
Quarterback Caleb Hanie signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys. He hasn't played in an NFL game since 2011, when he threw three touchdowns and nine interceptions in six games for the Bears.
The Browns announced Tuesday they signed running back Edwin Baker off the Texans' practice squad. To clear a roster spot, the Browns waived quarterback Caleb Hanie.
The Browns announced Tuesday the signing of quarterback Caleb Hanie, who could be pressed into action Week 14 at New England due to concussions sustained by quarterbacks Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden. In 10 career games (four starts), Hanie has completed 50.9 percent of his passes (59 of 116) for 679 yards, three touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Hanie's only appearances came for the Bears in 2009-11. His only starts came in 2011.
