Ryan signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Titans on Thursday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. The first day of free agency had been quiet for the Titans prior to the shrewd signing of Ryan, a 26-year-old corner who led the Patriots in tackles in 2016. In addition to being a sure tackler, Ryan has shown strong cover skills, racking up 25 pass breakups and six interceptions over the past two seasons. He figures to immediately earn a starting role in the Titans' secondary.
Ryan finished the 2016 regular season with a team-high 92 tackles to go along with two interceptions over the course of 16 games. In his fourth season as a pro, Ryan set a career high in tackles and his IDP relevance has continued in the postseason, with the cornerback having racked up 16 tackles and a pick in two playoff games. The 2013 third-rounder is slated to become a free agent this offseason and is thus likely poised to to earn a hefty raise, either in the form of an extension with the Patriots or a deal with another franchise.
Ryan registered 17 tackles Sunday against the Bills. This was as big of a game from the perspective of tackling that a cornerback could imagine. The 17 tackles equaled the total he had notched over the first three games of the season. Currently in his fourth NFL season, he already has seasons with four and five interceptions, so he has some value as an IDP candidate in that category, but the fact that he's posted at least six tackles in three of his first four games seems to indicate he's worth a look in IDP leagues.
During the 2015 regular season, Ryan was on the field for 89.3 percent of the Patriots' defensive snaps, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. Heading into the season, a big question facing the Patriots was how the team would replace starting cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. The answer ended up being pretty straightforward, as Malcolm Butler (98.8 percent of the team's snaps) and Ryan ended up leading the Patriots defense in playing time. In the process, Ryan racked up 74 tackles and four picks in 16 games, numbers that put New England's starting right cornerback on the IDP radar.
Ryan was on the field for all 71 of the Patriots' defensive snaps in Monday's win over the Bills, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. As was fellow cornerback Malcolm Butler, with Ryan's team-high nine tackles Monday upping his season total in that category to 50, to go along with four picks in 10 games to date.
