The Cowboys announced they have signed running back Lache Seastrunk and linebacker Justin Jackson on Monday, per the Dallas Morning News. Seastrunk excelled in high school in the Dallas area and starred at Baylor but has yet to find a niche in the NFL. He's been signed and released by the Redskins, Panthers and Titans. Jackson has also been signed and waived by three teams, the Raiders, Panthers and Redskins.
The Titans signed rookie running back Lache Seastrunk to their practice squad. The sixth-round pick out of Baylor was cut by the Redskins, then the Panthers.
The Redskins have sliced their roster down to the league-mandated 53 with several cuts on Saturday. Included among the waived offensive players are running backs Evan Royster, Lache Seastrunk and Chris Thompson. Also gone from that side of the ball are wide receiver Nick Williams and lineman Maurice Hurt . Defenders cut loose are cornerback Chase Minnifield, linebacker Everette Brown and safety Phillip Thomas. Placekicker Zach Hocker has also been waived. The Redskins have also placed defensive tackle Chris Neild and linebacker Darryl Sharpton on the reserve/injured list and defensive end Stephen Bowen and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson on the PUP list.
The Redskins have cut running backs Lache Seastrunk, Chris Thompson and Evan Royster, leaving the third spot behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu to Silas Redd. Royster is the most notable of the departures. But his reps have lessened in each of the last three seasons.
Roy Helu has held down the Redskins' third-down role among running backs for the past couple of seasons, but it doesn't mean he's a cinch to continue to do so. The team has Chris Thompson and Lache Seastrunk on the roster to compete with him, plus Helu has never shown excellent traits of a make-you-miss type of back. The Washington Post surmises that experience should keep Helu ahead of the other candidates for the job, but that any strong work this summer by Thompson or Seastrunk could change that.
