Lions defensive tackle Caraun Reid (ankle) practiced for the first time since Aug. 20, Josh Katzenstein of The Detroit News reports. Reid was atop the Lions' depth chart prior to being injured in Detroit's preseason game against Washington. Though he will likely return to the team in a supporting role behind Haloti Ngata and Tyrunn Walker, backup defensive tackles Jermelle Cudjo and Gabe Wright combined for 39 defensive snaps in Week 1 - a total Reid may take the bulk of once he returns to full health.
The Lions lost two linemen in Thursday's preseason game. Offensive lineman Larry Warford, expected to be the starting right guard, and Caraun Reid, battling for playing time at defensive tackle, both went down with ankle injuries. Jim Caldwell updated their condition on Friday. "It's going to be a little while but I'm not certain," Caldwell said per ESPN. "I couldn't give you an exact time frame with any of those guys."
With Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley gone, there will be a lot of opportunities for defensive tackle Caraun Reid to contribute for the Lions, per mlive.com. Though it's still early during organized team activities, Reid has impressed coach Jim Caldwell thus far. "I think he's done a tremendous job just in terms of his approach to it," Caldwell said. "He looks good, increased his strength, his lean muscle has gone up, I mean, the whole gamut. So, hopefully we'll see that translate when we get an opportunity to go out there and go after it." Reid, a fifth-round pick out of Princeton in 2014, has gotten a majority of the first-team reps during OTA's, which defensive coordinator Teryl Austin says ties back to the hard work he put in during the offseason. "He's trained really hard, he's in really good shape," Austin said. "He looks good right now. Obviously, we'll have to wait and see once we get to pads where we are, but I like what he's done so far." Reid appeared in 12 games last season and recorded just two tackles.
The Lions have listed the following players as inactive for Sunday's Wild Card game against the Cowboys: guard Larry Warford (knee), defensive tackles Nick Fairley (knee) and Caraun Reid, defensive back Josh Thomas, wide receiver Ryan Broyles, defensive end Larry Webster and quarterback Kellen Moore. Fairley was deemed doubtful to play Sunday on the team's final injury report, while Warford had been ruled out for the Wild Card game. Travis Swanson will draw the start at guard in Warford's absence. The Lions had three players listed as probable to play and all are active. Detroit is a 6-point underdog in Dallas for Sunday's playoff game.
The following players have been declared as inactive for the Lions in Sunday's game against the Packers: Nick Fairley, Ryan Broyles, Kellen Moore, Rodney Austin, Larry Webster, Josh Thomas and Caraun Reid.
