The Chargers waived or released these players: running back Kerwynn Williams, offensive tackle Nick Becton, fullback Zach Boren, tight ends Ryan Otten and Jake Byrne, receivers Micah Hatfield and Brelan Chancellor, linebacker Adrian Hamilton, guard Darryl Johnson, cornerback Lowell Rose and punter Chase Tenpenny.
Chargers veteran tight end John Phillips has been placed on IR with a right knee injury sustained Sunday against Oakland. He will miss the season finale against Kansas City. He finishes the season with four receptions for 30 yards. He will be replaced on the roster by fellow tight end Jake Byrne.
Tight end Brad Smelley has been promoted off the practice squad by the Texans. He will serve as the third tight end behind Garrett Graham and Ryan Griffin. Graham is questionable for the game Sunday at Indianapolis. The team has also released tight end Jake Byrne.
The Texans are struggling to keep their tight ends healthy. Starter Owen Daniels remained out Wednesday as he continues to recover from a fractured fibula that has had him on IR since Week 5. He was deemed close to returning three weeks ago. Also out on Wednesday were fellow tight ends Garrett Graham (hamstring) and Jake Byrne (flu).
The Texans have signed tight end Jake Byrne off the San Diego practice squad to compensate for the loss of starter Owen Daniels, who is out for at least eight weeks with a fractured fibula. The team is familiar with Byrne, who was wearing its uniform in camp and during the preseason. But Garrett Graham is now their starter at tight end.
