Gaffney was waived by the Patriots on Monday, ESPN's Field Yates reports. Gaffney's rights will now be subject to waivers and if he's not claimed, he'll become an unrestricted free agent. A sixth-round pick of the Panthers in 2014, Gaffney has yet to make a regular-season appearance since entering the league.
Gaffney signed a reserve/future contract with the Patriots on Tuesday, NESN reports. Gaffney, who ended the 2016 season on the Patriots' practice squad, slots in as the sixth running back on the team's offseason depth chart.
The Patriots have added Gaffney to their practice squad. With Bishop Sankey having caught on with the Chiefs, Gaffney is now the only running back on the Patriots' practice squad. He's obviously off the fantasy radar for now, but Gaffney would be a candidate for a promotion, and carries with the Patriots, if top power back LeGarrette Blount misses any time down the road.
The Patriots have waived Gaffney, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. Connecting the dots, the move could well be designed to pave the way for fellow RB Dion Lewis (PUP list) to be activated to the team's 53-man roster in the coming days.
Gaffney was promoted to the Patriots' active roster on Saturday. Gaffney signed with the Patriots' practice squad two weeks ago and is now the fifth running back on their active roster. It's unlikely that he has much of a role on offense unless injuries force New England to utilize him.
