Howard was claimed off waivers by the Jaguars on Friday, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports. Howard appeared in 15 games for the Browns last season as an undrafted rookie out of Miami and racked up 20 tackles and one pass defensed along the way. He will try to crack the Jaguars' 53-man roster as a depth option in the secondary and a possible kickoff return specialist as well.
Howard was waived by the Browns on Thursday, Nate Ulrich of The Akron Beacon Journal reports. Howard joined the Browns as an undrafted rookie in 2016, playing in 15 games and recording 20 tackles and one pass defensed. He'll become a free agent if he clears waivers.
Howard will be the team's starting free safety after Jordan Poyer (kidney) was placed on injured reserve, according to the team's official site. Howard had only been on the field for a total of 32 snaps during the first five weeks before playing 38 against the Titans in lieu of Jordan Poyer (kidney). Though inexperienced, the rookie will look to help a squad that ranks 27th in pass defense.
Howard will not play in Thursday's preseason game against the Bears due to a hamstring injury, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon-Journal reports. It's unclear at this time how Howard injured his hamstring or what the specifics of the injury are. He was in line to see a significant number of reps in the preseason finale if healthy, but those snaps will likely now go to Eric Patterson.
