Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was officially ruled out for Sunday's regular season finale at Kansas City, per the team's official website. Mathews' 2014 regular season campaign comes to an end after appearing in only six games, registering 330 yards and three touchdowns on 74 attempts on the ground. Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown will all shoulder the load in the running game. According to Vegas Insiders, the Chargers are a 1-point underdog at Kansas City. San Diego can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Sunday.
Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) was unable to practice again Wednesday as the team prepared for Sunday's game at Kansas City. Mathews has missed two straight games and nine overall this year. If Mathews can't play, Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown would share backfield duties. The Chargers are 3-point underdogs.
Chargers running back Branden Oliver lead the running-back committee Saturday, racking up 53 yards on 13 carries and adding three receptions for 28 yards. Oliver showed plenty of burst while continually churning out positive plays, leading the running-back carousel with 16 of the Chargers backs' 29 touches. Ronnie Brown managed to pick up 33 yards on seven carries while adding a nine-yard reception, and Donald Brown delivered 12 yards on four carries as well as a four-yard reception. If starter Ryan Mathews cannot play in Week 17, Oliver figures to once again lead a multifaceted rushing attack. The Chargers will square off with the Chiefs next Sunday.
The Chargers have rulled the following players as inactive for Sunday night's Week 14 matchup with the Patriots: nose tackles Ryan Carrethers (elbow) and Damion Square, running back Ronnie Brown, wide receiver Dontrelle Inman, guard Jeff Baca, tight end David Johnson and linebacker Cordarro Law. Carrethers had already been ruled out for Sunday's game so his absence won't be unexpected. The team does have all three of its questionable players available for action, as linebacker Donald Butler (quad) and offensive linemen D.J. Fluker (concussion) and Chris Watt (calf) are active. Also active are all the team's probable players, including quarterback Philip Rivers (chest), defensive tackle Corey Liuget (knee) and linebacker Andrew Gachkar (knee).
The following players have been ruled inactive for the Chargers in Week 13 against the Ravens: Dontrelle Inman, Ronnie Brown, Andrew Gachkar, Damion Square, Ryan Miller, Ryan Carrethers and Cordarro Law.
