Clemens finished the 2015 season with a total of six pass attempts in relief of Philip Rivers, who started all 16 games. Philip Rivers still has not missed a game since taking over as the starter in 2006, so Clemens was obviously not needed for much this season. In the one games in which he actually saw real action in relief, he went five-for-six for 63 yards and a touchdown, proving that he can be a capable passer if needed. Expect the Chargers to bring him back again in 2016.
Chargers quarterback Kellen Clemens completed 5 of 6 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss at Minnesota. With the game out of reach, the Bolts sat Philip Rivers. Clemens actually played pretty well, leading the team on a nice drive that ended with a 19-yard touchdown throw to Keenan Allen.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has started 142 straight games, the second-longest active streak behind Eli Manning's 166. With San Diego on a short week before Saturday's game against the 49ers, Rivers missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday with chest and back injuries, though he did participate in a Wednesday morning walkthrough. "I hate not practicing," he told ESPN.com. "But I think at some point you have to do what's best for me and the team. And practicing [Wednesday] wouldn't have been beneficial to moving toward Saturday." Added Rivers about his playing status: "At this point in the week, I think there's no doubt." If Rivers surprisingly sits out, backup Kellen Clemens would start. He went 4-5 as a starter with St. Louis last year. "One of the reasons we brought Kellen in here is that he was very competitive last year, thrown into a tough situation," offensive coordinator Frank Reich told the website. "He played well against some really tough defenses. He's a very smart competitive guy." The Chargers are 1-point underdogs at San Francisco.
The Friday night lambasting by Seattle did feature a few positives for the Chargers. Among them for the second straight game was the play of quarterback Kellen Clemens. Clemens, who managed a perfect quarterback rating in the preseason opener, recorded a 118.9 against the Seahawks by completing 14 of 21 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. "He did a really nice job once again this week (with) doing certain things and managing the game," Mike McCoy told the team website. "He got in the right spots, got us in and out of plays at certain times, and making some plays in the red zone for us. ... He's growing in the system." Clemens is all but set to open the season as the backup to Philip Rivers.
The Chargers have signed quarterback Kellen Clemens, reports the NFL Network. Clemens spent last season with the Rams. He is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback for the Chargers behind Philip Rivers and will replace Charlie Whitehurst, who signed with the Titans on Thursday.
