Spaeth was released by the Steelers on Thursday. The Steelers decided to part ways with the ten-year veteran after he failed his physical, signing free agent rookie tight end Mandel Dixon in his place. According to GM Kevin Colbert, Spaeth "never fully recovered from knee surgery that occurred this offseason, and will not be ready to return to football activities at this time." Combined with the retirement of Heath Miller in February, the Steelers now only have one tight end on their current roster from last season. Spaeth could attract the attention of a team looking to add a veteran presence at tight end, but it could be hard for him to find another opportunity until he is fully healed from his knee surgery.
Speath caught his only target for one yard against Denver on Sunday. Spaeth finished the 2015 season catching two of three targets for 10 yards, failing to score a touchdown for the first time since 2008, and only the second time in nine seasons. Known more for his blocking skills, the Steelers have better options at tight end with Heath Miller and rookie Jesse James.
Spaeth caught his only target for four yards in the Steelers' 16-10 loss to the Bengals on Sunday. Used primarily as a blocker and on special teams, the catch was the first for Spaeth, and only his second target of the season. Even if Heath Miller were to miss significant playing time, Spaeth is not worth a spot on fantasy rosters.
Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth (hand) is listed as active for Monday's game against the Chargers. Spaeth's return to action will bolster the team's depth at tight end behind starter Heath Miller, but he's not involved enough in the team's offense to be a fantasy lineup consideration.
Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth has been deemed probable for Monday night against the Chargers. Spaeth was unable to play last week due to a broken bone in his hand, but the setback will not prevent him from taking the field for the nationally televised game. He will slot back as the backup behind Heath Miller.
