The Cardinals waived running back Michael Bush and tight end Matthew Mulligan Friday, reports the team's website. The Cardinals signed Bush to help provide backfield depth, but Bush never received a carry for the Cardinals. With two open roster spots, the Cardinals promoted running back Kerwynn Williams from the team's practice squad and activated linebacker Matt Shaughnessy from short-term IR. The Cardinals play the Chiefs Week 14.
Andre Ellington has technically been one of the best 12 running backs in Fantasy this season, but you wouldn't know it by his recent performance. With just 12 yards on five carries Week 13 at Atlanta, he has averaged 25.3 yards on 13.0 carries in his last four games -- a stretch that almost directly coincides with the loss of quarterback Carson Palmer to a season-ending injury. Of course, health hasn't been Ellington's ally either. He has contended with a foot injury all season, costing him valuable practice time as well as limiting his ability, and to make matters worse, he suffered a hip pointer Week 13 at Atlanta, leaving before the end of the first half. So if you're keeping score at home, he was already hobbled and the No. 1 target for defenses with no threat of a passing game, and now he has a second injury that might keep him off the field altogether. I'd say regardless of his actual playing status, you might want to avoid Ellington for Week 14 against Kansas City. And if he does miss the game, the Cardinals will turn to some combination of Marion Grice, Stepfan Taylor, Robert Hughes and Michael Bush in his place, so good luck sorting out that mess.
The Cardinals have listed, WR Larry Fitzgerald, RB Michael Bush, LB Desmond Bishop, LB Kenny Demens, DT Alameda Ta'amu, DT Ed Stinson and TE Matthew Mulligan as inactive for Week 13 against the Falcons. Fitzgerald is dealing with a knee injury. He was unable to practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but put in limited work on Friday. Bush is still learning the system, and will not play this week. Demens and Stinson were ruled out prior to Sunday.
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Wednesday running back Michael Bush was signed for the long haul and not just for Sunday's game against the Falcons. He added Bush might play Week 13, but it is difficult to get up to speed that quickly. Bush last played for the Bears in 2013. He has 3,250 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns in 89 career games.
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians told SiriusXM NFL Radio that the team signed running back Michael Bush because "we need a guy who's going to pound it in there and close out games for us." Bush, 30, scored 25 touchdowns over the past four seasons before getting released by the Bears. Cardinals starter Andre Ellington has averaged under 3.0 yards per carry in three straight games and has rushed for three touchdowns this season.
