The Giants announced the release of quarterback Josh Freeman on Friday. He was signed in late April. The move leaves the Giants with two backup passers behind Eli Manning: Ryan Nassib and Curtis Painter. Both have a much-improved chance on making the team with Freeman out of the picture. Freeman was cut early into the 2013 season by the Buccaneers after leading them to an 0-3 start. He was signed by the Vikings, only to play in just one game for them. He totaled 761 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions last year.
Giants quarterback Curtis Painter had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday and will be out four weeks, the team announced. He's one of five QBs on the roster, along with Eli Manning, Josh Freeman, Ryan Nassib and newly-signed Rusty Smith.
The Giants plan to re-sign quarterback Curtis Painter, reports FOX Sports. Painter will compete for a roster spot behind Eli Manning and Ryan Nassib. In 2013, Painter was 8 of 16 passing for 57 yards and two interceptions in mop-up duty.
Giants quarterback Curtis Painter got into a game for the second time this season during a 23-0 loss Week 15 vs. Seattle. Painter replaced Eli Manning on the final drive, as Manning was done after throwing his fifth interception. Painter actually played well on the last drive, completing 4 of 4 passes for 30 yards. He was sacked once. The Giants are back in action Week 16 at Detroit.
