Player Outlook

The Saints signed ex-Vikings running back Adrian Peterson to compete for playing time in training camp this summer. For Peterson to regain his amazing Fantasy form, he'll have to first unseat Mark Ingram as the lead back, then defy age and experience. Peterson is 32 years old with 2,781 career touches. Typically running backs with that much wear-and-tear tend to underperform and get injured, which is exactly what happened to Peterson last year when he missed 13 games and averaged 1.9 yards per run when he did play. Chances are the Saints signed him to help shoulder some of the rushing workload, perhaps the 9.7 touches per game Tim Hightower had last year. That would lead to some very modest stats and basically make Peterson a touchdown-or-bust running back. Maybe he scores five or six times this season, including Week 1 against his old team, but trusting him to be a reliable Fantasy starter is unnecessarily risky. Expect some goofball in every draft to reach for Peterson this summer, but if he's still available in Round 8 and you want to roll the dice on him, it's not too steep of a price.

Player News
  • Peterson has drawn heavy praise from his new teammates for his performance through offseason practices thus far, Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune reports. Peterson is coming off his second knee surgery in three years, but that hasn't prevented him from being his explosive self during his first few practices as a Saint. The 32-year-old hasn't lost a step, according to his teammates, who've widely agreed that he brings a new dimension to their offense. Set to play on a two-year, $7 million contract, Peterson's role has yet to be defined, but if early indications of the veteran's fitness level prove true, Mark Ingram could face stiff competition for lead-back duties in New Orleans.

  • Adrian Peterson: Signs two-year deal with Saints
    By RotoWire Staff

Peterson (knee) is signing a two-year contract with the Saints, ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reports. Eventually willing to lower his asking price, Peterson likely was enticed by the idea of playing with Drew Brees, as the 32-year-old running back has spent most of his career stuck alongside mediocre or sub-par quarterbacks. While the New Orleans offense does provide ample scoring opportunities, Peterson will have to compete against Mark Ingram for carries, with Travaris Cadet likely chipping in on passing downs. This isn't an ideal situation for Peterson in terms of expected workload, but he could thrive on a per-carry basis as part of a New Orleans offense led by Brees, Ingram and wideouts Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. The Saints allotted 133 carries and 26 targets to last year's backup running back, Tim Hightower, even though Ingram didn't miss any games. Ingram did sit out at least three games, but no more than five, in each of the previous three years. Peterson should be back to full health before training camp -- if he isn't already -- coming off a season in which a torn meniscus and an adductor strain limited him to only 37 carries for 72 yards in three games.

  • Adrian Peterson: Approaching deal with Saints
    By RotoWire Staff

Peterson (knee) is believed to be close to securing a contract with the Saints, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. Peterson visited New Orleans earlier this month, and although he obviously left that meeting without a contract, the book was never shut on the possibility on him joining the Saints. Now, it appears that could be Peterson's next move, as a contract worth over $3 million is reportedly in the works. Should Peterson indeed sign with the team, he'd figure to replace the departed Tim Hightower in splitting snaps with Mark Ingram, with Travaris Cadet serving as the preferred pass-catching tailback. Additionally, his first game as a Saint would not-so-coincidentally come in a Monday-night affair on the road against his former team, the Vikings, in Week 1.

  • Adrian Peterson: Leaves New Orleans without contract
    By RotoWire Staff

Peterson (knee) left his visit to the Saints without a contract, but the two sides do plan to keep talking, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. Unlike his visit with the Patriots, Peterson's trip to New Orleans didn't include an on-field workout, according to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe. It doesn't mean the Saints' interest isn't legitimate, but the team might want to bring Peterson back for a second visit before it considers an actual signing. From the 32-year-old running back's perspective, New England would seem to be a better fit, with the Patriots currently surveying alternatives to fellow free agent LeGarrette Blount for the team's power-back role. If he were to join New Orleans, the future Hall of Famer likely would have to compete with Mark Ingram for early-down carries. While the Patriots also have a crowded backfield, the running backs currently on the roster -- James White, Dion Lewis, Rex Burkhead, D.J. Foster and Brandon Bolden -- are all valued for their receiving, blocking and/or special teams contributions more so than their running ability. Blount had 299 carries for 1,161 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, taking double-digit carries in each of the team's 16 regular-season games. Aside from New England and New Orleans, other possible fits for Peterson include Green Bay, Detroit and Oakland -- though Marshawn Lynch may soon account for the Raiders' vacancy.

  • Adrian Peterson: Worked out for Patriots
    By RotoWire Staff

Peterson (knee) went through a workout during last week's visit with the Patriots, ESPN.com reports. The workout suggests the Patriots actually have interest in Peterson, who was rumored to be visiting solely as a favor to his agent. The 32-year-old running back is scheduled for another visit Tuesday with the Saints -- which seems like a shaky fit due to the presence of Mark Ingram. New England would make more sense, as the Patriots may need to replace fellow free agent LeGarrette Blount, who wants to stay with the team but isn't happy with its current contract offer. Marshawn Lynch has also expressed interest in joining the Patriots if he can't work out a deal with his hometown Raiders, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. Be it Peterson, Blount or Lynch, the Patriots figure to eventually sign a veteran power runner to join a backfield that already includes James White, Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead. Other possible fits for Peterson include Detroit, Green Bay and Oakland.
