Barwin signed a one-year deal worth up to $6.5 million with the Rams on Thursday, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports. Barwin's signing addresses a major need for the Rams after the team jettisoned a pair of veteran edge rushers on the first day of free agency. The 30-year-old Barwin is coming off one of his least productive seasons as a pro, racking up 5.0 sacks over 16 games. That said, Barwin hasn't missed a game in six full seasons and he will add a veteran presence to an otherwise young defensive corps.
Barwin was released by the Eagles on Thursday. An eight-year pro, Barwin has spent his last four seasons with the Eagles. Although he started 16 games last season, his production suffered a drop-off, as Barwin recorded a three-year low sack total (5.0). Even though Barwin is now on the wrong side of 30, his consistency has been tremendous, as 2016 was the sixth year in a row he started all 16 regular-season games. Although his presence will be missed, Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Enquirer reports the move will save the Eagles $7.75 million in cap room.
Barwin started all 16 games at defensive end for the Eagles in 2016, while accumulating 20 tackles, five sacks, two passes defended, and a forced fumble in the process. Barwin continued his model of consistency in 2016, starting all 16 games for the third straight season. He has missed just one game in the past six seasons overall. The veteran will be entering his ninth season in the league in 2017, and has two more season under contract with the team. Barring any unforeseen injury, he figures to head into next season as the team's starting left defensive end once again.
Barwin (knee) practiced in full Friday. Barwin missed practice both Wednesday and Friday, so his status for Monday night's game against the Packers appears to be trending in the right direction.
Barwin (bone bruise) will not practice Wednesday. Barwin isn't a likely candidate to miss Monday's contest against the Packers, but he figures to miss some practice time in order to heal the bothersome bone bruise. Marcus Smith and Vinny Curry figure to see additional reps with Barwin sidelined for the time being.
