Joking Rex Ryan: Bills DE Jerry Hughes is 'ruining practice'

Rex Ryan has declared that new Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes is wrecking practice. Fortunately for the team, it was a tongue-in-cheek remark. Ryan made the joke because Hughes, who signed a five-year, $45 million contract extension this offseason, has been so dominant in the current sessions. Ryan estimated that Hughes registered five or six sacks before he had to pull him off the field and allow the offense to get its work in uninterrupted. "This just in: I am really happy we signed Jerry Hughes back," Ryan told "It's rare that you have to pull a guy from practice because he's ruining your practice. I had to pull him (Wednesday)." Hughes is coming off successive 10-plus sack seasons. Ryan expressed certainty that he will continue to thrive despite a shift in defensive philosophy. "If he keeps rushing the pass like he did (Wednesday), yeah I'd say so," Ryan said. "You can put him anywhere, too. He plays much bigger than his frame. He's like 255 or something, but he plays much bigger. He can play as an end, play as an outside backer. He's definitely a physical player, he's a great athlete."

Bills working on new deal for DE Jerry Hughes

The Bills announced they've continued to engage in negotiations for a new contract with defensive end Jerry Hughes. "We've sent a proposal over to his representatives. His representatives have sent a counterproposal," Bills general manager Doug Whaley said through the team's website. Hughes, set to be a free agent when the new league year begins, has been a key component to the Bills' defense over the past two seasons. Hughes recorded 10 sacks in each of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Whaley said the Bills have no plans on using the franchise tag on Hughes. "We're trying to avoid that because we're trying to get him long term for sure," said Whaley of Hughes. "We want to keep everybody on the same page so they feel like, 'Hey I got a good deal.' And as the Buffalo Bills we say we got a good deal."

Whaley: Bills working on deal with Jerry Hughes

Meeting with the media at the Indianapolis scouting combine on Thursday, Bills general manager Doug Whaley was optimistic about the team's chances of keeping defensive end Jerry Hughes. Hughes is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in a few weeks, but the Bills have been working with his representatives on a new contract. Whaley said that the team and Hughes' agent exchanged salary proposals in recent days. "I just got off the phone with (senior VP of football administration) Jim Overdorf, who talked with their representatives at length last night," Whaley said. "There's an open line of communication. I haven't met with J.O. yet to see how close we are or if we're close at all. I'll meet with him soon." Hughes had 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles for the Bills last season.
