Report: Browns LB Scott Solomon to miss 4-6 weeks

Browns linebacker Scott Solomon, who suffered what is likely a high ankle sprain in Week 1 loss against the Jets, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Solomon's injury occurred on the fourth play from scrimmage Sunday, and he was later carted from the sideline to the locker room. With the loss of their run-stopping linebacker, the Browns went on to give up 154 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries. In the wake of Solomon's absence, Barkevious Mingo, Nate Orchard, and Armonty Bryant could see more action.

Browns LB Barkevious Mingo battling unheralded Scott Solomon

If the college credentials of Scott Solomon were weighed against those of fellow Browns linebacker Barkevious Mingo, one might surmise that they do not belong on the same field. But much has changed since the former joined the Titans undrafted three years ago and the latter was selected with the sixth overall pick by Cleveland in 2013. And now, Solomon is a threat to earn more playing time than Mingo. "Scott is very quickly becoming one of my favorite players," Browns defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil told the Canton Repository. "The offense calls him 'Bloodbath.' He's like a heat-seeking missile coming off the edge. Solomon is battling Mingo and 2014 seventh-rounder Armonty Bryant for on-field action. Mingo fell behind a bit when he sustained a shoulder injury that required surgery. "(Mingo) is going to have to compete for playing time on early downs," O'Neil added. "He's going to have a role in our sub-packages. No one is guaranteed anything on the defense." Solomon has played in 22 NFL games, but has yet to contribute to more than nine tackles in a season.
